Our take

Not one, but several waterfalls strung together over a kilometre, with giants' kettles sculpted into the volcanic lava. A properly wild corner.

The guide that goes with itLes plus belles cascades d'Auvergne

A string of waterfalls along the Couze Pavin, with giants' kettles carved into the lava, a stone's throw from Besse.

It isn't a single fall, but a series of waterfalls following one another over about a kilometre along the Couze Pavin, below Besse. The river runs between beeches and conifers, leaps from ledge to ledge, and carves giants' kettles (the famous oules) into the black lava. Each waterfall has its name: the Saut de Bec, the Cascade de la Reine, the Caverne, the Chaudrons.

You get there on foot from the historic centre of Besse, in front of the church: a loop of about 6 km waymarked in yellow, allow a good two hours. To be quicker, a round trip of about 45 minutes starts from the recycling centre, less pretty but efficient.

The path runs alongside the Couze and stays rough: roots, smooth rocks, mud. Good walking boots are essential, and give it a clear miss in rain or snow, it is far too slippery.

Why we love it

  • One fall after another, from ledge to ledge, over about a kilometre
  • The giants' kettles carved into the black lava, the oules
  • The river running between beeches and conifers, below Besse

Top tip

Start from the church in Besse for the real loop (yellow waymarking). If you are in a hurry, the round trip from the recycling centre takes you straight out at the falls.

Before you go

  • Two ways in: the yellow loop from the church (a good two hours) or the shortcut from the recycling centre (about 45 minutes).
  • The path runs alongside the Couze and stays rough (roots, smooth rocks, mud): good walking shoes are essential.
  • In rain or snow, forget it: it is far too slippery.
