Our take

A 20 m fall over real basalt columns, at the end of an easy path through cool forest, and the Cascade du Rossignolet to link up, all in just under an hour.

A 20 m fall over basalt columns, in the forest at Le Mont-Dore: 40 minutes there and back on an easy walk along the Ronde des Cascades.

At Le Mont-Dore, the Queureuilh is 20 m of water tumbling down basalt columns, in a cool, shaded forest.

The start is from the free car park of the landscaped cemetery, route de Prends-Toi-Garde, 2 km from the centre. From there, follow the waymarked path of the Ronde des Cascades: allow about 40 minutes there and back of easy walking for 1.9 km, on ground that barely climbs (60 m of ascent).

Its name is said to come from a dialect word for the squirrel. The basalt columns the water slides over are old lava flows that cooled in column form, a classic of the Auvergne volcanoes. Want to go further? The loop links up with the Cascade du Rossignolet (about 1 hour for the two), and from the Queureuilh, a path climbs to the Saut du Loup, 1 km further up (116 m of ascent).

Our take, honestly: it's the perfect walk when you want water and forest in a short time. Wear closed shoes, the path is slippery after rain, and in winter, on snow or ice, bring small crampons.

Top tip

Link up with the Cascade du Rossignolet, on the same path: you can do both in just under an hour. Closed shoes, it's slippery after rain.

Before you go

  • Free car park of the landscaped cemetery, route de Prends-Toi-Garde, 2 km from the centre of Le Mont-Dore, towards La Bourboule.
  • Closed shoes, the path is slippery after rain.
  • Easy walk, to do as a family. Suitable for an all-terrain pushchair if you avoid the steps, except in snow or ice; with very young children, a baby carrier is still simpler.
  • Dogs allowed, on a lead.
  • Link up the Rossignolet and the Saut du Loup for all 3 waterfalls
  • In winter, on snow or ice: small crampons or snowshoes
