Our take

The site combines a torrent-like stream that tumbles down in a series of falls, a double waterfall as the high point and a rye mill from 1811 restored by the commune, all on a family loop of about 25 minutes.

A double waterfall under the fir trees above Laveissière, with an 1811 mill at the foot of the falls. Family loop of about 25 minutes.

Above the hamlet of Chambeuil, in Laveissière, the stream of the same name rushes down the slope in a series of falls under the fir trees. The finest, a double waterfall, has to be earned after a good climb.

Access is easy: free car park at the edge of the hamlet, then a family loop waymarked in blue, about 25 minutes' walk. The path runs flat to the mill, then climbs along the stream to the falls. Wear good shoes, it's a steep climb.

Take the time to stop at the Chambeuil mill, a small building from 1811 restored by the commune: the water of the stream turned a wheel there to grind rye. A picnic area completes the site.

Why we love it

  • The stream tumbling down in a series of falls under the fir trees
  • The double waterfall, at the top of the climb
  • The 1811 mill restored by the commune, whose wheel ground rye

Top tip

The mill is reached almost on the flat from the car park, but the climb to the double waterfall is steep and slippery in wet weather. Wear soles with good grip, especially with children.
