Our take

A waterfall to enjoy at two paces: the upper drop can be seen from a platform with a picnic table beside the D12, and a waymarked loop follows the Mars between stone walls, then through forest.

The guide that goes with itLes plus belles cascades d'Auvergne

The Mars tumbles down through the Falgoux forest in a series of drops. The upper part is easy to reach from the D12, or by a waymarked path from La Chaze.

At Le Falgoux, the Mars is still just a mountain torrent. It tumbles down through the forest in a series of drops: the Cascade du Biaguin. The upper part can be admired from a purpose-built platform, with a picnic table and a railing, beside the D12 that climbs towards the Puy Mary.

For the walk, follow the path waymarked in blue from the hamlet of La Chaze: a 3.8 km loop, about 1 hour 30, alongside the Mars between stone walls and then through forest. The slope steepens over the last 250 metres, so watch out for the sheer drop on your right.

Access is free all year round. When the snow melts or after rain, the flow swells. The lower part of the waterfall, by a path that goes down through the wood, is trickier to reach and for the experienced only. The site is also listed for canyoning.

Why we love it

  • The Mars tumbling down the Falgoux forest in a series of drops
  • A platform beside the D12 to look at the upper fall, picnic table included
  • The stone walls lining the path before it enters the forest
  • A triple waterfall, signposted from the road

Top tip

From La Chaze, another path leads to a second waterfall, the Coustaou one. Enough to see two waterfalls on the same outing.

Before you go

  • In spring, when the snow melts and the Mars is in full flow.
  • For the upper drop, access is easy from the D12 that climbs towards the Puy Mary: a platform with a railing and a picnic table faces it.
  • For the walk, the path waymarked in blue starts from the hamlet of La Chaze: a 3.8 km loop, about 1 hour 30 along the Mars.
  • The last 250 metres steepen and run alongside a sheer drop on your right: that's where to keep your eyes open.
