Our take
A thermal building from 1852-1856, registered as a historic monument and still in service: it treats rheumatism and cardio-arterial diseases with water of exceptional gas content.
The Royat thermal baths, built in the 19th century on springs used since Roman times.
In Royat, on the edge of Clermont-Ferrand, thermal water has been used since Roman times. The thermal establishment still makes its living from it: thermal cures in rheumatology and for cardio-arterial diseases, over a season that runs from spring to autumn.
Even without treatment, the building is worth a look: built from 1852 to 1856 by the Clermont-Ferrand architect Agis-Léon Ledru, it lines up Ionic columns across its façade, topped with copies of ancient statues. The inside, a place of treatment, is not open to visitors. And the thermal park is right next door if you want to extend your stroll.
Why we love it
- The Ionic columns topped with copies of ancient statues, on the 1852-1856 façade
- Carbotherapy, made possible by water exceptionally rich in gas
- Springs used here since the 1st century
- The thermal park right next door, to extend your walk
Top tip
Combine it with a stroll in the neighbouring thermal park, with open access all year round along the Tiretaine. From Clermont, buses B, 5 and 26 stop at place Allard, in front of the baths.
Before you go
- The 2026 thermal season runs from 13 April to 7 November: everything happens within that window.
- Mini-cures last 6 to 12 days: the option for anyone who can't set aside three weeks.
- There's also a discovery option, to try the thermal water without committing to a cure.
- The phone line is staffed Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 12:30 then 13:30 to 18:00, and not at weekends.
