La Belle Meunière is in Royat, the spa town right next to Clermont-Ferrand. The house sits between the river and the thermal park, in a residence with a past.
On the sleeping side, it is small and proud of it: four bedrooms, not one more. Each has a name (Coco Chanel, Georges Pompidou, Alexandre Varenne, Les amants de Royat) and a character of its own. It is more a charming guesthouse than a standardised hotel.
The other half of the place is the table. A fine-dining restaurant run by chef Laurent Jury, who works with farm produce: cul noir pork cooked in hay, saddle of young rabbit, scallops with ceps. The house is affiliated with the Maîtres Cuisiniers de France and listed in Gault & Millau.
What we like: you sleep right above a real kitchen, in a peaceful spot along the water. That is what brings the regulars back.
