Our take
A lava flow two million years old, basalt columns, and a bench to watch the water cross them.
A waterfall near Laqueuille: 30 min of easy walking there and back, a lava flow two million years old and its basalt columns.
On the way out of Laqueuille, towards Le Mont-Dore, a small hamlet gives the waterfall its name: Le Trador. You leave the car near the Verdeix bridge, and the rest is done on foot.
The path reaches the stream, the Verdeix: about a kilometre in all. Allow around thirty minutes there and back, it is easy and works very well with children. At the end, the water tumbles down a lava flow two million years old. The real reason to visit is the basalt columns the water crosses: pillars of dark rock born from the cooling of the lava.
The path is open all year round. On site, a bench is waiting for you to take in the fall.
Our take, honestly: come for the geology and for a short, quiet walk. It's free, open at any hour, the kind of stop that is ideal between two Sancy volcanoes, with one small exception: dogs are not allowed.
