La Maison de la Monne is a renovated former farm on the heights of Olloix, south of Clermont-Ferrand. The Chaîne des Puys is in view, Clermont twenty minutes away.
Fair warning: this is not a little gîte for two. It's a big house with 14 en-suite rooms, approved by Jeunesse et Sports (the French youth and sports authority). Groups, school trips, seminars, walkers: they welcome all sorts here.
On site, a bar-restaurant serves generous regional cooking: handy when you get back from a day outdoors.
Around it, enough to fill a weekend: the Massif du Sancy, the Puy de Dôme, Vulcania, the lakes and volcanoes, Romanesque churches and castles. The house opens straight onto the walking trails (PR, GR30, a variant towards Compostela).
