Our take

Baths of Roman origin where the water flows naturally hot. 19th-century vaults, old mosaics: not mere decoration, real heritage.

Thermes du Mont-Dore. Gallo-Roman waters, 19th-century vaults, a thermal spa open to the general public from April to early November.

The thermal establishment of Le Mont-Dore is a true temple of Belle Époque spa culture. Built between 1817 and 1823 on the site of former Gallo-Roman baths, then extended and entirely reworked inside in the 1890s, it has kept its neo-Byzantine decor almost intact: monumental halls, galleries, polychrome paintings and mosaics, and even Gallo-Roman remains uncovered during its construction. Its waters and gases, springing up in the heart of the building, serve a cure renowned for the respiratory tract (ENT, asthma) and for rheumatism. Without taking treatments, you can discover the establishment on a heritage guided visit, during the thermal season.

Why we love it

  • A thermal temple built from 1817, interior decor reworked in the 1890s
  • Polychrome mosaics and Gallo-Roman remains inside
  • The guided visit: from the springs to the architecture, two centuries of spa tradition

Top tip

Without taking treatments, you can see the establishment on a 45-minute guided visit, in the afternoon on weekdays, from April to the end of October (until 30 October in 2026; €7 per adult, €6 for ages 6 to 15): booking is compulsory at the Sancy tourist office. For peace and quiet, aim for April, right at the start of the thermal season.
