Our take
The comfortable place to stay in Salers: in the heart of the village, you have dinner without getting back in the car and head off to the spa. And the private car park is free for guests.
A 3-star hotel-restaurant in the heart of Salers, in the same family since 1962. Spa, hammam, jacuzzi and a semi-gastronomic restaurant.
Salers is that lava-stone village perched at 950 metres, listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France (the Most Beautiful Villages of France). Le Bailliage is the historic place hereabouts: the Bancarel family has welcomed travellers here since 1962, when it was the village's first hotel. Three generations later, Marion and Antoine still run the place.
For accommodation, 23 rooms, from 18 m² for the standards to 50 m² for the largest family mini-suite. The spa is worth a detour even if you aren't staying here: sauna, hammam, whirlpool, sensory shower and a counter-current pool with a hydrotherapy waterfall. Open to everyone by reservation, from 09:00 to 20:00.
The restaurant offers semi-gastronomic dining, with a terrace overlooking the garden. The cooking is recognised as Maître Restaurateur and showcases the Cantal terroir, with Salers beef leading the way. Closed on Sunday evening, Monday and Tuesday, so plan your dinner accordingly.
Our honest take: it's the comfortable option for dropping your bags in Salers without getting back in the car in the evening. And the private car park, free for hotel guests, is a real plus.
