Our take

Walking among the foundations of a Roman temple at 1,465 m altitude, with 360° views over the volcanoes. The setting is exceptional.

Ruins of the Gallo-Roman temple dedicated to Mercury at the summit of the Puy de Dôme. In Antiquity, pilgrims climbed the volcano to worship him.

At the summit of the Puy de Dôme, the Temple of Mercury is the largest mountain sanctuary in Roman Gaul. Built in the 2nd century and dedicated to Mercury Dumias, the god of the Dôme and protector of travellers and merchants, it covered around 3,600 m² on tiered terraces, with a vast pronaos and a square cella surrounded by a gallery. Forgotten for centuries, it was uncovered in the late 19th century during the construction of the observatory, then restored by the Département in the 2010s to give it back its monumental scale. On site, a museum space (models, reconstructions) tells the story of the sanctuary. You get up there on foot by the sentier des Muletiers or by the Panoramique des Dômes train.

Why we love it

  • The largest mountain sanctuary in the whole of Roman Gaul
  • Dedicated to Mercury Dumias, the god of the Dôme, in the 2nd century
  • The museum space that reconstructs the temple at the summit
