Our take

The castle you can see from all over Le Puy-en-Velay and that you want to climb up and visit. Once at the top, a full-frame view of the volcanic sucs (the local name for volcanic peaks) of the Puy basin. The keep is worth the climb.

A medieval fortress above Le Puy, a 32 m keep, cradle of the Polignac family (11th-17th centuries).

A medieval fortress on a basalt plateau at 806 m altitude, perched 100 m above the Puy plain. Cradle of the Polignac family, viscounts of Velay from the 11th to the 17th century. The 32 m keep, with a 16 x 13 m base, was built between 1385 and 1421 by Randon Armand X. The seigneurial residence dates from the 12th century. Listed as a Monument Historique (a protected French heritage site) as early as 1840, at the time when Prosper Mérimée was inspecting the monuments of France. On 18 July 1533, François I was welcomed at the fortress: that day, he gave the Polignacs the nickname “Kings of the Mountains”. The association Forteresse Polignac Patrimoine has managed the site since 2012.

Before you go

  • Late in the afternoon, when the low light sculpts the sucs.
  • Free parking at the bottom, then a walk up to the castle.
  • 5 km north-west of Le Puy-en-Velay. Without a car, line 12 of the TUDIP network links the Le Puy intermodal hub to Polignac: get off at the Maison communale stop, the closest to the fortress. In 2026-2027, no buses on Sundays or public holidays.
  • Allow 1 hour to 1 hour 30 on site for the full visit
  • Can be combined with Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe and Le Puy Cathedral
