Our take

The Duke of Berry's chapel, the only remnant of his ducal palace, within the precincts of the court of appeal. Flamboyant Gothic, and large 15th-century stained-glass windows restored from 2014 to 2017.

The Flamboyant Gothic chapel of the Duke of Berry, the only remnant of his ducal palace, within the precincts of the court of appeal.

Flamboyant Gothic chapel built between 1395 and 1403 for Duke Jean de Berry (uncle of Charles VI), in the heart of Riom, then capital of the duchy of Auvergne. The only remnant of his ducal palace, it now stands within the precincts of the court of appeal. A fragment of the True Cross earns it its title of Sainte-Chapelle. Its large 15th-century stained-glass windows were restored from 2014 to 2017.

In 2026, the chapel is open for self-guided visits in July-August, Tuesday to Sunday from 13:00 to 17:00. All year round, a guide-lecturer from the Pays d'art et d'histoire (heritage label) leads a guided tour on the first Saturday of the month at 15:00 (and on Tuesday and Thursday at 16:30 in July-August), by reservation on 04 73 38 99 94. Entry to the monument costs €2, free for under-18s and for everyone on the first weekend of the month. You enter through the garden of the court of appeal, Rue de l'Hôtel de ville. Allow 1 hour on site. Riom is 15 min from Clermont-Ferrand: combine it with the Tour de l'Horloge and the Musée Mandet.
