Our take

A school of landscape painters little known outside the circle of art lovers. About a hundred painters, from Auvergne, from all over France and even from abroad, made the winters of Murol their subject during the first half of the 20th century.

The guide that goes with itQue faire en Auvergne quand il pleut

The painters of the École de Murol(s), who came to paint the snow and the landscapes of the Sancy from the 1910s onwards, brought together in the centre of Murol.

Museum devoted to the École de Murol(s), a grouping of about a hundred painters who roamed the area during the first half of the 20th century. It all starts with three artists: Victor Charreton and Wladimir de Terlikowski, who met in Besse in the winter of 1911, then Abbé Léon Boudal, parish priest and painter of Murol. Their speciality: snow, painted outdoors.

The route opens with romantic lithographs of the Sancy, climbs to the founding trio, then to the women painters of the group, before the temporary exhibition room. The museum is at 12 rue du Château, in the centre of Murol. In 2026, the full price is €6, free for under-18s, and the museum opens every day in July-August, Wednesday to Sunday the rest of the year, with two annual closures: the last fortnight of May, and November to mid-December.

Why we love it

  • Charreton's and Terlikowski's snow effects, the group's speciality
  • Canvases that tell the story of a region before colour photography took over
  • The light of Auvergne interpreted by landscape painters from the region, from all over France and from elsewhere
  • A space for the group's women painters, about ten in all

Top tip

Combine it with the Château de Murol and Lac Chambon for the trilogy. In 2026, the museum has scheduled guided tours, guided walks and workshops: have a look at its events calendar before you come. Outside July-August, the museum is closed on Monday and Tuesday: plan your visit between Wednesday and Sunday.

Before you go

  • With children aged 6 to 12, ask for the free game booklet at the entrance
  • Combine it with the nearby Château de Murol: its ticket gives you the reduced rate at the museum (€4 in 2026)
  • In 2026, the museum opens every day in July-August; the rest of the year, Wednesday to Sunday, except the last fortnight of May and from November to mid-December
