Our take

The first public via ferrata in the Puy-de-Dôme, on the Capucin rock (the emblematic silhouette of Le Mont-Dore). Airy but of very moderate difficulty, with a view over the Haute Dordogne valley and the Puy de Sancy.

The editors · Teddy L.How we choose our places
  • Best season: summer
  • Before 10:00 or very late in the afternoon
  • With children: yes
  • Not wheelchair accessible
  • For a fine day

The Capucin rock via its cliff face: 222 m of height gain above Le Mont-Dore, with the Sancy opposite.

A via ferrata set up at the Salon du Capucin (Sancy massif), reached from Le Mont-Dore by car or by the funicular (the oldest electric funicular in France, 1898), then a 20-minute walk to the start. The route is graded PD (peu difficile, “not very difficult”), with three levels from a shared start (green, blue, red) that come together at the top of the Capucin. 222 m of height gain, from 1,246 to 1,468 m: allow 1 hour 30 on the rock face, with a small monkey bridge and airy sections. The route has open access. If it's your first via ferrata, take a guide: the Le Mont-Dore tourist office will point you the right way. Otherwise you need a helmet, harness and lanyards with an energy absorber: in 2026, the full kit can be hired for €20 at the Mont-Dore Aventures park, at the Salon du Capucin. The 2026 season runs from 1 April to 15 November, when there is no snow: the site closes as soon as there is snow on the access or the route. Minimum age 10, and minors must come with an adult.

Why we love it

  • Hands on the rock, feet over the void: verticality has to be earned
  • The view that opens up over the massif from the rock face
  • A choice of difficulty level, from sensible to tough
  • The walk back down through the forest, giving the tension time to drop

Top tip

Take the Capucin funicular up (€8 one way and €12 return for an adult in 2026). A guide is strongly recommended for a first via ferrata: in 2026, the guided outing costs €46 per person. Bring gloves and shoes that grip.

Before you go

  • Open-access route. For a first via ferrata, a guide is still strongly recommended: the Le Mont-Dore tourist office will point you the right way.
  • Gloves and shoes that grip.
  • Get up to the Salon du Capucin by car or by funicular (€12 return for an adult in 2026), then walk 20 minutes to the start.
  • With a child, check their weight: the safety lanyard is designed for 40 to 120 kg
  • Allow a 20-minute walk to get back down once you are at the top of the Capucin
  • Go up by funicular: it saves your legs before the effort on the rock face
