A 14-hectare volcanic lake about twenty minutes from Clermont: fishing, family picnics and a water level that does what it likes.
The little neighbour of Lac d'Aydat, less than 3 km to the north. Same volcanic story: the lava flow from the Puy de la Vache and the Puy de Lassolas formed a natural dam, which gave rise to both lakes. The result is 14 hectares of water sitting at 861 m, at the foot of the Chaîne des Puys.
No swimming here: the lake is private and reserved for fishing (trout, pike, zander, carp), and a permit is compulsory. Car park and picnic area on site, open access all year round, in a peaceful corner of the Aydat countryside.
Its oddity is its level: it varies sharply, and no one has explained it to this day. You will never see the same lake twice.

Top tip
The lake's level changes sharply. Before going to photograph the reflections, have a look at recent photos: at some times of year, the water can be much lower.
Before you go
- Early in the morning, when the lake is peaceful.
- No swimming here: the lake is private and reserved for fishing.
- A fishing permit is compulsory: day permits at the Aydat tourist office, in Sauteyras, or in the little hut by the lake.
- You'll find a car park and a picnic area on site.
- Before going for the reflections, look at recent photos: the water level varies sharply.
