Our take

Auvergne's biggest natural lake, formed by a lava flow that dammed the valley. Swimming, sailing, fishing, walking: everything is possible, 25 minutes from Clermont.

The guide that goes with itLes lacs volcaniques d'Auvergne

Auvergne's biggest natural lake, 25 minutes from Clermont. Supervised beach in summer, sailing, fishing and a walk round the lake in 1 hour 30.

Auvergne's biggest natural lake: 65 hectares at an altitude of 837 m, formed by a lava flow that dammed the valley. Volcanic in origin (more than 8,500 years ago), surrounded by forests and villages. In 2026, swimming was supervised in July and August, from 13:30 to 18:30, in the designated beach area; outside that, it is forbidden by prefectural order. Sailing, paddleboarding and kayaking at the water sports base. Waymarked path round the lake (about 5.5 km, 1 hour 30), partly on wooden walkways along the wetland. Fishing is well regarded (trout, pike). Open access, free car parks around the lake. Renaturation works on the beach run until summer 2028: its car park closed for good on 31 August 2026, and the beach stayed accessible until 21 September 2026, before a first phase of works (September 2026 to June 2027) then a second (September 2027 to June 2028). 25 minutes from Clermont-Ferrand.

Why we love it

  • The water reflecting the forests and volcanic hills all around the lake
  • The calm of the path along the shore, away from the beach
  • Feeling underfoot the volcanic ground that created this lake
  • The beach coming to life in summer, with swimmers and colourful sails

Top tip

Walk round the lake early in the morning, when the water is calm: the best viewpoints are on the south and east sides of the lake. For something to eat, a few snack bars and restaurants are a stone's throw from the water.

Before you go

  • Swimming: 2026 season ended on 31 August.
  • For photos, come early in the morning, when the water is calm, or in the late afternoon, when the sun goes behind the hills
  • Come on a weekday if you want the beach to yourself; a summer weekend is another story
  • Stay on the waymarked path and the walkways over the wetland, and don't go into the reed beds
