Our take

A rare combination: a 16-metre drop reached in 5 minutes, the Cascade du Sartre a few hundred metres away, the Lac des Cascades right next door and the Puy Mary as a backdrop.

The guide that goes with itLes plus belles cascades d'Auvergne

A 16-metre drop on the Petite Rhue d'Eybes, 5 minutes' walk from the road, in the glacial valley of Cheylade.

The Petite Rhue d'Eybes passes under the D262, then drops 16 metres in one go: that's the Cascade de la Roche, also known as the Cascade du Pont de la Roche. You are in the glacial valley of Cheylade, right in the Parc des Volcans d'Auvergne.

From the church in Cheylade, it's 3 km south along the D62, then take the D262 towards the Lac des Cascades. You park in the bend, a path plunges into the forest, and five minutes later you are at the foot of the falls.

The top is easy to reach. The bottom calls for good shoes: the descent is steep and slippery after rain. On site, enamelled lava plaques have you looking for silhouettes in the rocks and watching the small creatures of the river.

Why we love it

  • A sixteen-metre drop in one go, five minutes after leaving the car
  • The Petite Rhue d'Eybes disappearing under the D262 before tipping into the void
  • The enamelled lava plaques that have you looking for silhouettes in the rocks
  • The Puy Mary as a backdrop and the Lac des Cascades close by

Top tip

Link it with the Cascade du Sartre, a few hundred metres away, then the Lac des Cascades: three stops on the same stretch of the D262, with a picnic area for a break.

Before you go

  • In spring, when the river is flowing well, or in autumn for the colours of the undergrowth.
  • From the church in Cheylade, go 3 km along the D62 towards the south, then take the D262 towards the Lac des Cascades: you park in the bend, and the path starts from there.
  • Five minutes of descent through the forest is enough to reach the foot of the falls, but the end is steep and slippery after rain: come with shoes that grip.
  • The top of the waterfall is easy to reach, the bottom has to be earned: it is up to you how far down you go.
  • Access is free. The Cascade du Sartre is a few hundred metres away, then the Lac des Cascades: three stops on the same stretch of the D262, with a picnic area for a break.
