Our take

The local Sunday-afternoon meeting place. Families, students, readers on the benches.

The big Romantic-style park in the centre of Clermont-Ferrand. 5 hectares, a pond, a waterfall and century-old trees.

Five hectares of greenery right in the centre of Clermont-Ferrand. The Jardin Lecoq is the green lung of the people of Clermont: you come to read on a bench, walk the dog (dogs are welcome) or let the children run off to the play area.

The park is named after Henri Lecoq, a pharmacist and botanist who arrived in Clermont in 1826 and ran the city's botanical garden for nearly thirty years. Its current English-style layout dates from 1863: curving paths, sloping lawns, trees that are now a century old, and a volcanic rock grotto from the same period.

You walk round the large ornamental pond, walk alongside the waterfall, pass under the roses of the pergola. Since 2026, a sixth entrance links Avenue Vercingétorix to the park by a green steel staircase. Open access. The Muséum Henri-Lecoq is right next door: natural history in the same outing.

Our honest take: it's a real slice of Clermont life. Come on a Sunday afternoon, when families, students and readers share the benches. Allow an hour, two if the sun settles in.

Why we love it

  • The large ornamental pond, the waterfall and the volcanic rock grotto
  • The children's play area under the century-old trees
  • The Byblis fountain (1905) and the metal footbridge of 1877
  • The Muséum Henri-Lecoq right next door to follow on

Top tip

The Muséum Henri-Lecoq is right next door (natural history): a way to follow on with a visit out of the rain if the weather turns. Note that the museum is closed on Mondays, opens only at 13:00 on Sundays, and its floors can only be reached by stairs.

Before you go

  • Buses E1 and E2 drop you at the Lecoq stop.
  • Dogs accepted, handy for the daily walk
  • Entrances accessible by wheelchair, reduced-mobility parking nearby
  • Sunday afternoon: family atmosphere, plan to stroll for an hour or two
  • The park closes at nightfall: 21:00 in summer, 18:00 in midwinter
