About Le Puy-en-Velay
Le Puy-en-Velay, préfecture de la Haute-Loire, 18 500 habitants à 630 m d'altitude au cœur du Velay volcanique. Cité classée UNESCO au titre des chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, c'est le point de départ historique de la Via Podiensis (GR65).
Trois pitons volcaniques structurent la ville : le Rocher Corneille et sa statue Notre-Dame de France (fonte de 213 canons pris à Sébastopol, 1860), le Rocher Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe et sa chapelle romane perchée à 85 m, et la Cathédrale Notre-Dame-du-Puy, art roman mêlé d'influences byzantines et mauresques.
Sur place, la Cathédrale et son cloître se visitent (nef en accès libre), et les 268 marches du Rocher Saint-Michel mènent à sa chapelle perchée. La statue Notre-Dame de France offre une vue à 360°. Crochet par le Musée Crozatier et le Jardin Henri Vinay voisin, un coup d'œil à l'Hôtel-Dieu sur le chemin de Compostelle, et la verveine se goûte chez Pagès, distillée ici depuis 1859.
Le Puy, c'est aussi la lentille verte du Puy AOP et la dentelle (savoir-faire classé UNESCO). En pratique : centre piéton, parking Clauzel, gare à 4h de Paris via Saint-Étienne. Grand moment de l'année : le pèlerinage de l'Assomption mi-août. Comptez une journée pleine, deux avec la forteresse de Polignac (10 min).
