The feel of the route
Le Puy-en-Velay, European capital of the Ways of St James
Le Puy-en-Velay is a heritage showpiece in the heart of the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region. Starting point of the Via Podiensis, the main route in Europe to Santiago de Compostela, Le Puy-en-Velay is an exceptional site, preserved from the ravages of time.
The town has plenty of surprises in store for visitors: its 35-hectare protected area, with the Cathedral and the Hôtel-Dieu, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela, bears witness to the richness of its architecture and history. The Notre-Dame de France statue stands as an emblem on its pedestal, the highest point of the town, watching over the Marian city.
A city of art, an artistic and cultural centre, a place of exchange and meeting, Le Puy-en-Velay offers many varied events all year round. The capital of the Velay is also an ideal holiday spot for discovering a region whose volcanism has shaped the beauty of its landscapes.
