The feel of the route

Big landscapes, viewpoints and heritage all come together on this walk in the upper Planèze, which climbs to the summer mountain pastures. There are many small built heritage features: bread ovens with massive vaults, finely carved crosses…

The route in detail

Start: At the wash house square in Paulhac. Head right into the village. Cross the road the first time and carry on straight ahead.

The second time, follow the sign for Sauvages. Go through Bressanges. A little further on, viewpoint over Sauvages and the Cantal mountains. Make your way to the bread oven at Sauvages.

Continue to the left and climb to reach a crossroads near the Fraut-Haut farm.

Turn right. View of the Planèze and the Margeride. Leave one path straight ahead and take the path on the left that goes into the forest.

At the first crossing, take the hairpin bend on the right, 600 m further on, turn right onto a cleared strip through the trees; follow a fence on the left, then a low wall and find a path again. Follow it for more than 1 km.

At the crossing, bear right. Wide viewpoint, from the Margeride to the Cézallier. At the next crossing, turn left and reach Le Jarry. Go through the hamlet and go past the cross at the roadside.

Continue along a path, cross a stream. Off the route, towards a former private mill. Take the road on the left and go through Nozières; on leaving, continue along a path on the right for 1.5 km. Viewpoint over the hill and the village of Tanavelle.

Leave the track and, on the right, cross a meadow alongside a fence. Carry straight on, go through two more chicane gates and find a path again. Take a track on the right to reach the D 34. Viewpoint over Paulhac, the puy de Mercou and the Cantal mountains.

Cross the road, go through Loudier opposite and climb to the sports ground to rejoin the outward route. Return to Paulhac by the left.
