Auvergne for couples
Take three days, a cabin perched above Brioude, a dinner in Salers, a sunset at Lac de Guéry, and you'll see: Auvergne is one of the most underrated regions for a stay for two. A density of spa cabins, a long thermal tradition, views that silence conversations, and restaurants that take their time.
Here are 20 practical ideas, plus three weekend itineraries. The prices quoted are those of 2026, and they move with the season.
Unusual stays for two
It's probably the first decision to make, and the one that changes the whole stay. Auvergne has a rare concentration of cabins and domes with a private spa.
1. Cabanes Châteaux Peydébé (Vieille-Brioude, Haute-Loire). Three cabins perched in the woods, five minutes from Brioude. Each has its own covered private spa, marble basins, a king-size bed, air conditioning and bathrobes, and breakfast is delivered. Expect to pay from €299 a night for two.
2. Écrin d'Auvergne (Champs-sur-Tarentaine-Marchal, Cantal). Six lodges in the Parc des Volcans, each with its own cedar Nordic bath heated by solar power. The view takes in the meadow, the stream and the pond. Adults only, breakfast delivered to the lodge. Calmer than Peydébé, more nature.
3. Cabanes des Volcans (La Tour-d'Auvergne, Puy-de-Dôme). Wooden cabins perched in the trees of the bois de la Tour, on the Sancy side. The Cimes du Sancy cabin has its private spa on the terrace, facing the volcanoes. Expect to pay €165 a night for a cabin in the trees, from €300 for the one with a spa.
4. Spa toue cabanée at the Village Toue des Demoiselles (Chassenard, Allier). A different format: a boat converted into a 25 m² cabin, moored in the middle of a pond. To reach it, you climb into a small boat and row. Private spa on the terrace, shower room on board. Breakfast is an option, to be booked. Open from April to mid-November.
5. Transparent dome or bubble. Several estates in Auvergne offer transparent bubbles or domes for sleeping under the stars with a private spa. Best outside high summer (heat inside the bubble).
A wellness evening and thermal baths
Vichy, Royat, Le Mont-Dore, Chaudes-Aigues: Auvergne has its spa towns. For two, it's a perfect excuse.
6. Royatonic (Royat). A spa centre open by the day. Indoor and outdoor pools of thermal water at over 30°C, hammam, sauna, waterfalls, massage jets. Admission is €22 for 2 hours 30, or €34 for the package with towel and bathrobe. Massages and facials cost extra, by reservation. Ideal for half a day before dinner in Clermont.
7. Célestins Spa Thermal & Hôtel (Vichy). The institution, on the banks of the lac d'Allier: a giant thermal water pool, two saunas, a cold-water bath. The Pass Thermal Spa gives half a day of access, Monday to Friday. It is included with any booking of an à la carte treatment of at least 25 minutes or a treatment package, and spa access is reserved for guests who have booked treatments. Duo getaways, with a night, a massage for two and breakfasts, start at €460 for two.
8. Spa of the Mont-Dore thermal establishment. Treatments are taken in the Mont-Dore thermal baths, in the town centre, partly classified as a historic monument. In 2026, spa breaks start at €55 (three treatments), by reservation. Open from 2 April to 4 November 2026, mornings only: fit it in before a hike in the Sancy.
9. Caleden Chaudes-Aigues (Cantal). The hottest thermal waters in mainland France (82°C at the source). Pool entry €19 in the morning, €21 in the afternoon.
Restaurants for two
The meal is often the high point of a stay.
10. Le Pré (Durtol, two Michelin stars). The restaurant of Xavier Beaudiment, two Michelin stars. Foraged cooking, wild herbs from the volcanoes, precise plating. Thursday and Friday lunch is €59, Sunday dinner €79, the tasting menu €199, served for the whole table. The restaurant is open Thursday to Sunday only: book well ahead.
11. Les Caudalies (Vichy). A Napoléon III salon with its mouldings and high ceilings, the cooking of Emmanuel Basset, and 900 wines in the cellar. The lunch menu, on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday except on public holidays, runs from €31.50 to €36.50. The restaurant is closed on Sunday evening, Monday and Wednesday.
12. Auberge des Montagnes (Pailherols, Cantal). In the centre of the village of Pailherols, the same family has run the inn for five generations. Three dining rooms, the Cantal cooking of Stéphane Dubois, and the Grange bien-être (wellness barn) right next door: indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, hammam, treatment room. Book before you come.
13. Le Comptoir des Saveurs (Clermont-Ferrand). A stone's throw from the place de Jaude, a vaulted room, carte blanche menus from the chefs depending on seasonal produce, and a deli shop for takeaway. Menus from €25 to €48 at lunch, from €35 to €48 in the evening. Open Tuesday and Wednesday for lunch, then Thursday to Saturday for lunch and dinner.
Activities for two
To slot in between two meals or two spa sessions, activities to enjoy together.
14. Sunset at Lac de Guéry. Lac de Guéry (1,244 m above sea level, the highest lake in Auvergne) takes on a special light at dusk. The car park at the pass, on the D983, is charged from May to September at weekends, public holidays and school holidays: €0.90 an hour, €6 for the night, the first thirty minutes free. Bring a blanket, charcuterie and white wine from the Côtes d'Auvergne, and you'll sit there for 2 hours, feet in the grass, without moving. May to September, depending on the time.
15. Hike at the Pas de Peyrol (Cantal). The highest road pass in the Massif Central. Parking is charged, €5 for the day, and the summit of the Puy Mary is 30 minutes' walk away on a stepped path (150 to 200 m of ascent). The access roads to the pass close every winter, from the first snowfall until it melts in spring. 360° view over the glacial valleys. Aim for early in the morning (before 9:00) or after 18:00 for the light and to avoid the summer crowds.
16. Walk around Lac Pavin. 2.7 km of path through woodland, 93 m of ascent, around a perfectly round crater lake, emerald water, a strange atmosphere (the youngest crater lake in mainland France, only 6,900 years old). Ideal for an hour together. Free parking.
17. Hot-air balloon flight over the volcanoes. Auvergne Montgolfière takes off near Volvic or Orcines, at the foot of the Chaîne des Puys, or on the Sancy side, at sunrise or sunset, the season generally running from April to the end of October. Expect to pay €329 for a single seat and €619 for the duo ticket, for an hour in the air and nearly four hours on site. Flight over the Chaîne des Puys, a landing in a field nobody can pick in advance, a glass of champagne and local produce on your return. Book ahead, and the flight depends on the weather.
Romantic villages
Three listed villages where you can dawdle for a whole afternoon, the two of you.
18. Salers. Listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France (the Most Beautiful Villages of France), 950 m up, built in the dark volcanic stone of the neighbouring volcanoes, trachyte and andesite, under roofs of lauzes (stone slabs). Allow 2 to 3 hours for the tour (place Tyssandier d'Escous, lanes, ramparts, church). The village empties after 19:00, which is the best time to stroll through it together. Stay overnight at the Hôtel Restaurant et Spa Le Bailliage to enjoy the calm.
19. Charroux (Allier). Listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France, where Charroux mustard is made. Cobbled streets and the truncated bell tower of the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste. The Moutarderie de Charroux can be visited freely, free entry, with a tasting on site.
20. Pradelles (Haute-Loire). Listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France, in the south of the Haute-Loire, on the border with the Ardèche. It overlooks the Allier valley, with an impressive panoramic view. The Tour de Rochely and fortified gates from the 14th century, a preserved old town. The village's underground passages, though, are blocked up and out of bounds. Less visited than Salers or Charroux, a more secretive feel. Aux Portes des Légendes for a local dinner, on the heights of the village, with a view over the Monts du Gévaudan and Lac de Naussac from the terrace.
Gentle outings
Côtes d'Auvergne wine tasting. The Côtes d'Auvergne AOC (controlled designation of origin) is still little known outside the region, with its gamays and chardonnays born on the volcanoes. Several producers welcome visitors for a tasting: the Domaine Sauvat in Boudes, or the Desprat Saint-Verny cellar in Veyre-Monton. Allow 1 to 2 hours for the visit and tasting. A tasting at the counter is often free; a guided visit has to be booked and may be charged. Combine it with lunch in Boudes or Châteaugay.
Summer night market. In July and August, some villages hold producers' markets in the evening. A relaxed atmosphere, tastings by the light of string lights, sometimes concerts. An evening for two, cheap and local.
Three weekend itineraries
Itinerary 1: an intimate Sancy (2 days)
Friday evening: arrive in Murol, night in a spa cabin in the Sancy. Dinner at the Hostellerie du Beffroy, in Besse, in a 15th-century house. Saturday morning: walk around Lac Pavin, picnic lunch with local produce. Dinner at the cabin (hamper delivered) or in Besse. Sunday morning: a slow morning at the private spa. Brunch in the area. Leave after lunch.
Approximate budget for 2 people: €600-900, fuel not included.
Itinerary 2: thermal Vichy (2 days)
Friday evening: arrive in Vichy, dinner at Les Caudalies, night in a boutique hotel in the town centre. Saturday: morning stroll to the Source des Célestins, the parc des Sources and the opera. Afternoon: a treatment booked at the Célestins Spa Thermal. Dinner on the banks of the Allier. Sunday: the Halles market in the morning, lunch on a bistro terrace, then leave.

Itinerary 3: wild Cantal (3 days)
Friday evening: arrive in Salers, night at the Hôtel Restaurant et Spa Le Bailliage. Local dinner. Saturday: morning in Salers, then lunch in Pailherols (book, the village has few tables). Afternoon: Pas de Peyrol and Puy Mary. Night in a spa cabin in the Cantal area. Sunday: a slow morning, lunch in Chaudes-Aigues and the Caleden thermal baths in the afternoon. Monday: leave via Saint-Flour, stop at the Saint-Pierre cathedral in the upper town, and lunch on the road.
Approximate budget: €800-1,100, fuel not included.
Seasonal bonus
Spring (April-June). Gentians, flowering meadows, mild temperatures. The best time for hikes for two and balloon flights. Avoid 1 May and Whitsun (packed weekends).
Summer (July-August). Festival season: in 2026, the Festival d'Aurillac took place from 19 to 22 August and the Festival de La Chaise-Dieu from 18 to 30 August. Livelier but also hotter and more expensive. Book 2-3 months ahead.
Autumn (September-October). Without hesitation our favourite season for a stay for two. Spectacular colours on the volcanoes, few people, gentler prices, perfect temperatures for an outdoor spa in the evening.
Winter (December-March). The forgotten season for couples, wrongly. The Sancy and Lioran resorts for skiing, but above all spa cabins with snow all around: the contrast between hot water and a white landscape is among the most powerful moments the region has in store for two.
To wrap up
A stay for two in Auvergne is less about a packed programme than a well-chosen place to sleep, two or three high points, and the freedom to do nothing in between. The region suits that rhythm: you drive little, look a lot, and eat well.
