The ruined fortress perched above the Sioule gorges.
Spectacular ruins of a fortress founded at the end of the 11th century, perched on its rock above the Sioule. It guarded the valley and the Romanesque bridge at Menat, downstream. Listed as a historic monument since 1913, it is freely accessible all year: park in the car park below and finish the climb on foot. In 2026, the château part is closed to the public, but the grassy esplanade remains accessible, with an exhibition on the restoration work at the entrance. And you can carry on along the road through the Sioule gorges, towards Chouvigny.

Top tip
Stay on the paths, the site is protected. Combine it with the Chouvigny gorges for a loop through the Combrailles, and aim for sunset: the golden light on the rock is worth the wait.
Before you go
- Free access all year. Park in the car park below and finish the climb on foot, along a path through the woods. In 2026, only the grassy esplanade is open: the château part is closed to the public.
- Closed-toe shoes recommended, the path is rocky in places
- Follow on with the D915 scenic road straight afterwards, that’s what it’s there for
- Come early in the morning, the low light on the gorges is worth the trip
