Unusual accommodation by a pond at Condat-en-Combraille: hobbit house, perched dome, cabins. A night that makes a change.

Condat-en-Combraille, forty minutes from Clermont-Ferrand: a pond, trees, nothing else around. The Domaine du Balbuzard is named after a fishing bird of prey, and that suits it well, because everything here revolves around water.

Thirteen unusual places to stay, all different, plus chalets and rooms. A hobbit house half buried in the embankment, a wooden perched dome 3 m off the ground, a perched boat, a yurt, a tipi, cabins in the forest. On site: catch-and-release fishing (float fishing, carp or predator fishing), an electric boat, a sauna on stilts with a picture window onto the lake, and a terrace restaurant facing the pond, open in the evening at certain periods and by reservation.

Arrival from 16:00, departure before 10:30. Budget-wise, in 2026, the unusual accommodation ranges from €50 a night (tunnel tent, low season) to €114 (the hobbit house and the hobbit's den, high season, from 1 July to 31 August). Sheets are not provided, available as an option.

Our take, honestly: it works as well for a couple, with the perched dome above the lake, as for a family, because children ask for the hobbit house before they even arrive. We like that each place to stay is its own world, at the water's edge.
