Our take

Sleeping on the water, in a toue cabanée, a wooden boat inspired by Loire river boats, moored on a pond. Authentic and soothing.

Toues cabanées, wooden boats inspired by Loire river boats, moored on a pond in Chassenard. Some are reached by small boat. Open from April to November.

A village of unusual places to stay in Chassenard (Allier), on the banks of the Loire, near Digoin, on a Natura 2000-designated site. It is open from April to November. The stars are the toues cabanées: wooden boats inspired by those that carried river freight on the Loire, turned into 25 m² floating gîtes with beds made on arrival, a shower, WC, kitchenette and terrace. Some are moored at the edge of the pond and reached on foot; others have dropped anchor out in the middle: you reach them by small boat. The Toue Cabanée Spa has its own private whirlpool bath on the terrace.

The village takes its name from the demoiselles, the dragonflies that used to live on the pond. Around the boats: cabins, caravans (one of them adapted for wheelchairs), a foudre (a large wooden cask), a heated outdoor swimming pool, a mini-farm, a play area, pétanque, table tennis and catch-and-release fishing. In 2026, a night in a toue cabanée starts at €172, and the Futreau, a small gabare (a traditional river barge) for two that is reached on foot, at €90. Breakfast is optional, at €11.50 per adult.

Why we love it

  • The lapping of the water beneath your feet through the night
  • Breakfast delivered on board, as an option
  • The floating terrace at sunset, just you and the pond
  • The silence of a night on the water, with a gentle rocking when the wind picks up

Top tip

Book early for summer weekends. Hiking-style boots if you want to explore the banks.

Before you go

  • In 2026: toues cabanées from €172 a night, Toue Cabanée Spa from €181, Futreau (small gabare for two) from €90, starting prices shown in September and varying by date. Optional breakfast: €11.50 per adult, €7.50 per child up to age 12, delivery to your accommodation €5.
  • Pack a warm layer even in summer: the air cools quickly over the water at night
  • Arrive before evening to enjoy the low light on the pond
  • Arrivals between 16:00 and 19:00, departure by 11:00 at the latest. The car park, which is free, is at the entrance to the village.
  • If you use a wheelchair, go for the Roulotte Bohème: access ramp, double doors and space to move around designed for a wheelchair. Some of the toues, on the other hand, are reached by small boat.
