Our take

Nearly six centuries after it was built, it is still a family home: furnished rooms, portraits in the arms room, Flemish tapestries in the lower hall. And to finish, 139 steps up to the wall walk and the view over the valley.

15th-century fortress at Tournemire, lived in by the same family since it was built around 1435.

A 15th-century mountain fortress in the heart of Tournemire, a village listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France (the Most Beautiful Villages of France). The keep, begun around 1435, was built by Louis d'Anjony, a companion of Joan of Arc, and the same family has lived there since the beginning. The château is classified as a historic monument.

Four round towers, 40 m high, 139 steps. You pass through the lower hall with its Flemish tapestries, then the salle des preux (hall of the Worthies) with its 16th-century frescoes, which tell the legend of the Nine Worthies. The arms room keeps its portraits, and the rooms are furnished.

The visit ends on the wall walk, with the view over the valley, then up under the timber framing and the lauze (stone slab) roof. Guided tours only: €10 per adult, €6 per child, free under 6 (2026 prices). Open from February to November in 2026.

Top tip

Cars don't drive through the village: park in the car park at the entrance to Tournemire and allow 15 minutes' walk. The visit is guided, with no booking for individual visitors. Your dog can come, indoors and out. For something to eat, La Petite Grange is in the village centre, a few minutes' walk away. And Salers is 25 km away, if you want to carry on.
