Vichy's market hall has a proper name: the Grand Marché. It is the town's covered market, on place Pierre-Victor-Léger, with more than a hundred traders, craftspeople and producers under the same roof.
It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 07:00 to 13:00, public holidays included. Closed on Monday.
Fruit and vegetables, bread, meat, charcuterie, fish, cheese, wine, delicatessen, flavours from further afield: you fill your basket without going back outside. You can also sample things on the spot.
On Saturday, look up. The mezzanine hosts the market of local and organic producers, from around Vichy, from the Montagne bourbonnaise to the Limagne. That is the day to aim for.
The building dates from the mid-1930s. Designed by the Vichy architect Jean-Henri Mazon, it was meant to supply the hotels and restaurants of the spa town. Its complete restoration was finished in 2006.
The tip: put your picnic together here, then head to the Parc des Sources, about ten minutes' walk away.
