A family-run oil mill, in Lapalisse since 1898: that year, Abel Paillard, a weaver by trade, bought an oil mill on Rue du Marché. More than a century later, the company still presses and bottles its oils in Lapalisse.
Its brand, Abel 1898, carries the founder's name. In virgin oils: walnut, hazelnut, sesame, pumpkin seed, macadamia and a few others.
To buy, head for the Échoppe des saveurs, the oil mill's shop, a stone's throw away, at 29 Rue Baudin. Oil dispensers there cut down on packaging, and the shelves mix the mill's own oils with products from the Bourbonnais and Auvergne. Call before you go to find out its opening hours. The oil mill visit is arranged on request and ends with a farm aperitif.
