The pitch
The Sancy means more than 670 km of waymarked trails and the highest summit in the Massif Central, the Puy de Sancy, at 1,885 m. Here are 10 hikes in the massif, from a family stroll to a summit climb.
1. Lac Pavin loop (1 hr, easy)
A 2.7 km waymarked loop around an almost perfectly circular crater lake (the youngest in mainland France), with 93 m of elevation gain. Not suitable for pushchairs: bring the baby carrier. Ideal for getting started or with children. At daybreak, the mist on the water is really something.
2. Rossignolet and Queureuilh waterfalls (1 hr, easy)
From the car parks on the Avenue de La Bourboule in Le Mont-Dore, a 2.4 km waymarked loop through the woods. First the Cascade du Rossignolet, then the Cascade du Queureuilh, more than 20 m high, 400 m further on. Ideal on a hot day: cool and accessible.
3. Vallée de Chaudefour (3 hrs, easy)
A nature reserve, a glacial valley between volcanic walls. Start from the Maison de la Réserve Naturelle, 7 km from Chambon-sur-Lac: the valley floor takes 3 hours there and back, on a waymarked path. Dogs are not allowed, even on a lead. Red beeches in autumn, wildlife you can see (mouflons, marmots). One of the most beautiful in Auvergne.
4. Lac de Servières loop (easy)
A mountain lake perched at 1,202 m, in the commune of Orcival, with few visitors. Ideal in July and August, when you're looking for a quiet spot.
5. Puy de l'Angle from the Col de la Croix Saint-Robert (moderate)
At 1,738 m, you get 90% of the Sancy view without the cable car crowds. From the pass, at 1,451 m, the climb follows the GR 4. Often windy at the top, so bring a fleece.
6. Roche Sanadoire and Roche Tuilière (moderate)
Two neighbouring volcanic rocks, right in front of you from the Col de Guéry car park: that's where you set off. Stony ground. Spectacular in autumn, with the beeches ablaze at the foot of the rocks.
7. Puy de Sancy by the normal route (3 hrs, difficult)
The roof of Auvergne, 1,885 m. The Sancy cable car, then 864 wooden steps (≈ 20 minutes of climbing; the cable car is out of service for maintenance from 31 August to 18 December 2026), or the climb on foot via the yellow-waymarked loop that starts at the foot of the cable car: 7 km, 3 hours, 560 m of elevation gain. Dogs are not allowed, and the loop is closed when the ski area is open. Views of the Alps on a clear day.
8. Sea of clouds on the Puy de l'Angle (at sunrise)
Set off 1 hour before sunrise, head torch required. Mid-October is the best window: a sea of clouds in the valleys, golden light. It's an experience that stays with you, worth trying once.
9. The Vallée de Chaudefour via the ridges (5 hrs, challenging)
From the Chambon-des-Neiges car park, a 15.5 km loop with 935 m of elevation gain, waymarked in green and graded very difficult. You climb via the Cascade de la Biche, then the path runs below the Puy de la Perdrix and to the left of the Puy Ferrand before dropping down to the Col de la Cabane. Dogs are not allowed, and the route is closed when the ski area is open.
10. The GR 4 through the Sancy (2 days, moderate)
To get started with multi-day hiking: 31 km and 766 m of ascent in two stages, from the Col de la Croix Morand to Égliseneuve-d'Entraigues. Day one, 16 km along the ridges, from the Puy de la Tâche to the Puy de Sancy, then down to Super-Besse. Day two, 15 km at a gentle pace along the Lac des Hermines and the Lac Chauvet. Map and topoguide in your pack. Dogs are not allowed in the Chastreix-Sancy nature reserve.
General tips
- Check the weather the day before: the Météo-France forecast (the French national weather service). Above 1,500 m, things change fast.
- Water and food: 1 L of water per person minimum, no drinking fountains on most trails.
- Boots with ankle support: stony ground, lots of scree.
- Phone: decent 4G coverage, but not everywhere. Remember to download offline maps to your phone.
- Off season: many inns close from November. Book ahead.
Questions we get asked
FAQ
When is the best time to go?
May to June and September. Avoid July and August (crowds + heat lower down) and winter, unless you're equipped for snow.
Can you do these hikes with a dog?
On a lead, yes, except on nos. 3 and 9 and on the walking loop of no. 7, where dogs are not allowed, even on a lead. On no. 10, they are not allowed in the Chastreix-Sancy nature reserve.
What about with children?
Nos. 1 (Lac Pavin), 2 (Rossignolet) and 4 (Servières) are fine from age 5. The others call for a bit more independence.
Where should you stay as a base?
Le Mont-Dore, at the foot of the Sancy, or Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, near Lac Pavin.
