Département 03 · Allier
Hikes in the Allier
The Allier is quieter than its volcanic neighbours. No high mountains, but generous bocage, the Montagne Bourbonnaise to the south-east (highest point 1,287 m at Puy de Montoncel) and the Tronçais Forest, famous for its oaks. The département lends itself more to walks than to big high-altitude outings.
- Forêt de Tronçais: 10,800 ha of century-old oak forest
- Montagne bourbonnaise: Puy de Montoncel (1,287 m), Loge des Gardes
- Val d'Allier: national nature reserve, birds
- Vichy spring: Pavillon Sévigné, Parc des Sources
