The local guide by season, by type of trip and by budget in the Sancy massif

The local guide to choosing your accommodation in Le Mont-Dore by season and type of trip: thermal cure, skiing in the Sancy, summer hiking, or simply a volcanic stopover.

Where to stay in Le Mont-Dore

Le Mont-Dore runs on two very different seasons. In summer, it's an active spa town with hikers, curistes (people taking the thermal cure) and families on their volcanic transhumance (seasonal migration). In winter, it's a small ski resort linked to the Super-Besse ski area, with a marked lull in November and April. In between: a slow spring, a luminous autumn but with fewer options open.

The village is compact (about 1,160 inhabitants), set at 1,050 m altitude at the foot of Puy de Sancy (1,885 m, the highest point of the Massif Central). The choice of hotels is limited but varied. We advise against turning up without a booking in July-August: places fill up fast.

Choosing your accommodation by season

June to mid-September. High season, generally mild weather, ideal hiking, thermal baths open. High prices, fully booked 4-8 weeks before the peak (mid-July to mid-August). Favour the hotels in the village centre to do everything on foot.

Mid-September to end of October. Golden light, beech woods ablaze, perfect hiking, and places that close early: in 2026, Le Panorama closes on 27 September, the Hôtel du Parc on 5 October, Le Castelet on 10 October, Le Wilson on 18 October.

November. The annual lull. Many establishments closed for holidays or renovation. Avoid unless you're after absolute silence.

Mid-December to March. Ski season, peaks at Christmas, New Year and during the February school holidays. For winter 2026-2027, the Le Mont-Dore resort plans to open from 19 December 2026 to 21 March 2027, subject to snow cover. The ski area is linked to Super-Besse's, but access to the second area is only offered when the link between the two resorts is open, which is not the case every day. Sleep in the centre of Le Mont-Dore and take the shuttle, or go up to the Sancy resort to have the lifts under your windows.

May to early June. Thermal season already under way (the thermal baths opened on 2 April in 2026), hiking still cool at altitude, flowers and waterfalls in full flow. A good compromise on quality and price.

Hotels in the heart of the village

Hôtel Le Castelet (3 stars, avenue Michel Bertrand, centre of Le Mont-Dore). 28 rooms, bar, wellness area with sauna, hammam and swim spa, one room adapted for reduced mobility. 100 m from the shops and 300 m from the thermal baths. No restaurant on site, but places to dine within 400 m. A well-rounded address, open from 15 May to 10 October 2026.

Hôtel du Parc (3 stars, 11 rue Meynadier). Right in the heart of the resort, near the thermal park and the thermal baths. 59 rooms including three adapted for reduced mobility, restaurant, bar, ski storage room, games room for children. Half board and full board available. Open from 27 April to 5 October 2026, then from 27 December 2026 to 14 March 2027.

Hôtel Le Panorama (3 stars, avenue de la Libération). 300 m from the thermal baths, with a view over the valley, a heated indoor pool, a bar and the restaurant Ô'yeti. Open from 8 May to 27 September 2026, then from 19 December 2026 to 14 March 2027.

Alti'Pic Hôtel (2 stars, 30 avenue Georges Clemenceau, at 1,050 m altitude). A family address in the village, with garden, terrace, shared lounge, and a small Alti'Spa: Nordic bath, sauna, hammam. 19 rooms, open until 31 October 2026, then again from 26 December 2026.

Hotels and residences with a wellness area

Hôtel Puy Ferrand (directly at the foot of Puy de Sancy, Sancy resort, about 5 minutes from the centre of Le Mont-Dore). 26 rooms, restaurant La Table de l'Ours, bar with a panoramic terrace, indoor pool, sauna and hammam. Ski-in, ski-out in season.

Sancy Resort (aparthotel, village of Moneaux, Chambon-sur-Lac). 19 apartments for 2 to 6 people, equipped kitchen, spa, and the restaurant La Table des Mouflons on site. A good base for getting around between Le Mont-Dore and Super-Besse, but you're not in Le Mont-Dore: you'll be driving every day.

Budget options

Gîte d'étape Les Hautes Pierres (15 boulevard Mirabeau, Le Mont-Dore). A former barn renovated a stone's throw from the village and the trails: 37 places in dorms for 3 to 6 people and two rooms, a wellness room with sauna and jacuzzi, and an evening meal. Bed and breakfast, half board or full board. Open from 3 April to 2 November 2026, then from 5 January to 7 March 2027.

Résidence hôtelière Le Wilson (1 avenue Wilson). Sixteen studios with kitchenette, beds made on arrival, linen provided, cleaning during the stay. 150 m from the village centre and 300 m from the thermal baths, with a free shuttle to the resort in winter, at weekends and during school holidays. Handy for a cure, or for a stay where you cook yourself.

Auberge de Jeunesse Le Grand Volcan (route du Sancy, 4 km from the centre, right by the slopes). A chalet open to everyone, not just young people: 33 rooms and 107 beds, bathroom in every room, a kitchen available from April to mid-November, bar, sauna, ski and bike storage, ski hire on site in winter. Closed from 12 November to 18 December 2026.

Gîtes, rentals and B&Bs

For stays of 3 days or more, especially with family or friends, renting is unbeatable. The offer is dense throughout the valley.

Gîtes de France Puy-de-Dôme. The network certifies gîtes in Le Mont-Dore itself, including the two addresses presented below: the Gîte de la Tâche and La Closerie de Manou.

Private rentals. The offer is more limited in Le Mont-Dore itself (converted curistes' studios), wider on the outskirts. In the commune, the Gîte de la Tâche sleeps five people in the hamlet of La Tâche, 6 km from the centre: renovated house, two bedrooms, living room, equipped kitchen, terrace, and the Sancy trails at the end of the lane. It's rented by the week or for a weekend. A car is essential, and book three to four months before the winter holidays.

B&Bs (chambres d'hôtes). The offer is thin in Le Mont-Dore itself, a little fuller in La Bourboule and in the villages around. It's often three or four rooms per house, so book early.

A whole house for a group. La Closerie de Manou, at Le Genestoux in the commune of Le Mont-Dore, is an 18th-century stone building of 275 m² with six bedrooms and 14 beds, rated 4 épis (ears of wheat). It's rented whole, not by the room: for a weekend, a short four-night stay or for three weeks.

Refuges and mountain accommodation

For hikers and lovers of self-reliance at altitude:

Le Refuge de la Banne (Murat-le-Quaire, 1,334 m, 5 km from the village). You drive up by road, and the GR30 passes 1.5 km away. A dorm of 9 places, three double rooms and six lodge tents, with a bar and evening meals. A small bivouac area adjoins the refuge during its opening periods. Note: open from mid-June to the end of August only.

Volcan'Hostel (Picherande, southern side of the massif, 12 km from Super-Besse and 9 km from Chastreix). A renovated former Auvergne farm turned into a gîte d'étape (walkers' hostel): 27 places in four rooms, each with shower, washbasin and WC, breakfast, half board or an equipped self-service kitchen, and the house also welcomes groups. The GR30 passes through, which makes it a logical stop if you string days together.

Buron de la Croix Saint-Robert (commune of Chambon-sur-Lac, at 1,300 m, two kilometres before the Col de la Croix Saint-Robert). From the Christmas holidays to the end of March, this former summer buron (mountain hut) becomes a staffed refuge: ten beds, half board at €57 per adult at the 2026 rate, by reservation only, 48 hours in advance. When snow closes the road, allow 1 hour of walking from the barrier on the Chambon-sur-Lac side, 2 hours from Le Mont-Dore.

Unusual stays

The offer exists in the Sancy, but rarely in Le Mont-Dore itself: the addresses are scattered around the massif, plan on a car.

Terre d'Horizon (Chastreix, 1,100 m, at the entrance of the Chastreix-Sancy nature reserve). Four small wooden houses of 24 m² with green roofs, for two to four people, one of them wheelchair accessible. An apartment for six, and two lodge tents from mid-May to the end of September. Nordic bath, sauna, and a small café open to all.

The lodge tents at the Refuge de la Banne (Murat-le-Quaire). The refuge mentioned above also sets up six lodge tents at 1,334 m, at the foot of the Banne d'Ordanche: real canvas bedrooms of 16 m², with a 160 cm bed, one of them a family tent for four. Mid-June to the end of August only.

Camping

Camping municipal L'Esquiladou (Le Mont-Dore, route des Cascades, 1,050 m altitude). 71 pitches and 17 equipped mobile homes, in a quiet corner at the foot of the massif, with a shuttle to the thermal baths leaving from the campsite. Aquatic area with heated pool, open from 1 June to 30 September in 2026. The campsite is rated 3 stars and open from 1 April to 4 November 2026.

Camping municipal Les Crouzets (Le Mont-Dore, 500 m from the centre, on the banks of the Dordogne). The resort's second municipal campsite, smaller and simpler than L'Esquiladou: 58 semi-shaded pitches, 2 stars, heated sanitary blocks, and a motorhome service area at the entrance open all year. It is a camping caravaneige (a campsite open to caravans in snow conditions), and it opened on 19 December 2025 for a season ending on 27 September 2026. No reservations, you just turn up.

Bivouac. Wild camping is not allowed anywhere on the massif. Bivouacking is tolerated along a trail on a multi-day hike, with the landowner's agreement: a lightweight tent, put up from 20:00 to 8:00, and never on the summits or on the slopes of the volcanoes (set up at the edge of a forest). Not allowed in the Chastreix-Sancy, vallée de Chaudefour and Sagnes de la Godivelle nature reserves, and at Lac de Guéry; the commune of Chambon-sur-Lac also bans it by municipal order (arrêté), except on its designated area. No fires, ever, and you take your rubbish away with you. The simplest option remains the five free areas on the massif: Picherande, Chambon-sur-Lac, Chastreix, Super-Besse and the Salon du Capucin in Le Mont-Dore.

Curistes: specific tips

The Le Mont-Dore thermal baths treat the respiratory tract (asthma, allergies, ENT) and rheumatology. In 2026, they open from 2 April to 4 November, and close on Sundays.

Furnished rentals for curistes. A traditional thermal cure in Le Mont-Dore means 18 days of treatment for a 21-day stay: a furnished rental (meublé) or a studio with kitchenette, within walking distance of the thermal baths, does the job very well. Le Wilson, for example, also rents its studios for three weeks.

Long stays. Le Panorama, the Alti'Pic Hôtel and Le Wilson, among others, offer a cure package or rate. It's not automatic: ask for it, it isn't always displayed.

Booking tips

Peak demand. 14 July to 20 August (absolute saturation), February school holidays (ski). Outside those, there's plenty of availability up to 2 weeks before.

Booking ahead. For July-August: 6-10 weeks ahead. For the February ski holidays: 8-12 weeks. Outside peaks: 1-2 weeks is enough.

Closed season. Among the addresses in this guide, most close between the end of September and early November 2026, and a good number reopen in December 2026 for winter, often until March 2027.

Parking. The village centre is compact, public car parks free or cheap. No parking worries in mid-season. In high season, arrive before 10:30 or after 17:30.

To combine with...

Le Mont-Dore is the ideal base for the Sancy. Four directions to explore.

Puy de Sancy and the ridges (on foot or by cable car). A full day: climb, 360° panorama, descent via the Capucin and the waterfalls. Note, the cable car is closed for maintenance from 31 August 2026 until the Christmas 2026 holidays: until then, the climb is on foot.

The Sancy lakes (Pavin, Chambon, Guéry). A day by car and on foot: a circuit of Lac Pavin, lunch in Besse, a swim at Lac Chambon, the Roches Tuilière and Sanadoire viewpoint late in the afternoon.

Saint-Nectaire and the AOP (protected designation of origin) cheese (25 km to the east). Visits to farm-caves, tasting, thermal spring, a major Romanesque church of Auvergne.

La Bourboule and the Dordogne gorges (7 km to the west). Sister spa town, casino, Parc Fenestre for children.

To wrap up

Le Mont-Dore rewards those who accept its seasonality. Summer for hiking, winter for skiing, the in-between seasons for silence. The offer is more limited than in Clermont but amply sufficient if you plan ahead.
