Our take

You walk into the house where Lafayette was born, right up to the room he was born in. And the park, with its arboretum, basins and pond, is worth the walk on its own.

Lafayette's birthplace, where he was born on 6 September 1757: his room, Madame de Lafayette's salon and a park with an arboretum, a pond and a 300-year-old oak.

If you are driving between Brioude and Le Puy-en-Velay, make the detour to Chavaniac-Lafayette. This is where Gilbert de Lafayette was born, on 6 September 1757, in a 14th-century manor house destroyed by fire at the end of the 17th century, then rebuilt in 1701.

You visit the room where he was born, Madame de Lafayette's salon (arabesque wallpaper, Versailles parquet) and a small theatre where a film tells the story of his American epic. Outside, the park is worth the time you give it: box topiary, four basins, a pond, an arboretum and the Lafayette oak, planted three centuries ago.

Allow 1 hour 30 for an unguided visit with an audioguide (€8 for adults in 2026, free under 11). The park on its own costs €4 (2026 price).

Why we love it

  • The room where Lafayette was born (1757)
  • Madame de Lafayette's salon
  • Film on his American epic
  • Arboretum, basins and pond
  • Lafayette's oak, planted three centuries ago
