Our take
A jumble of rocks on the Rance, gours polished by the water, picnic tables and a legend of a pact with the Devil: a cool break, open access.
A jumble of rocks blocking the Rance, near Vitrac, with picnic tables on site.
Le Trou du Diable is a jumble of rocks blocking the Rance, in a wild, cool corner. The water swirls between the blocks and has carved out, over the centuries, gours: basins of polished stone. After rain, the flow rises and it really roars. Allow a quarter of an hour of easy walking from the car park, in hiking shoes, and follow the path to the end. You come for the calm, the sound of the torrent and an aperitif with your feet in the cool.
Why we love it
- The jumble of rocks and the gours carved by the Rance
- Picnic tables on site
- The wild atmosphere, even stronger after rain
Top tip
The local legend: the lord of Muratet, with no spring to water his meadows, promises his soul to the Devil in exchange for a stream delivered before the cock crows. In the dead of night, he goes into the henhouse with a candle, the cock crows too early, and the Devil, furious, hurls this jumble of rocks into the Rance. Park at the car park very close by: the site is a quarter of an hour's walk away.
