Our take
The largest religious building in the Bourbonnais, in a small town of about 1,700 inhabitants. Effigies of the Bourbons, tombs of the sainted abbots of Cluny, the zodiac column: a lot of history for so few residents.
The former Cluniac priory of the Dukes of Bourbon: the largest religious building in the Bourbonnais, ducal recumbent effigies and the zodiac column.
A former Cluniac priory, which came into being in the 10th century through a donation by Aymar, ancestor of the Bourbons, to the abbey of Cluny. Its priory church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul is the largest religious building in the Bourbonnais: a Romanesque church of the 11th and 12th centuries, reworked in the Gothic style in the 15th. Two abbots of Cluny, Saint Mayeul and Saint Odilon, died and are buried there. The Dukes of Bourbon made it their necropolis: the old chapel holds the recumbent effigies of Louis II and Anne Dauphine d'Auvergne, the new chapel those of Charles I and Agnès de Bourgogne. The museum, set in the former monastic barns, holds the zodiac column, a 12th-century Romanesque pillar carved with the labours of the months and the signs of the zodiac; its ticket also gives access to the priory garden and the remains of the cloister. The church is open for self-guided visits. In 2026, the museum and garden cost €6 (€10 with a guided tour). Allow 1 hour 30. 15 minutes from Moulins.
Why we love it
- The recumbent effigies of the Dukes of Bourbon, in the priory church's two funerary chapels
- The nave that stretches out, long and silent, under the Romanesque-Gothic vaults
- The zodiac column, in the museum: a 12th-century Romanesque pillar, the labours of the months on one face, the signs of the zodiac on another
- The remains of the cloister and their rib vault laid out in a quincunx, included in the museum visit
Top tip
The zodiac column is easier to read with a guide. In 2026, from September to mid-November, the museum offers a guided tour at weekends at 14:30, and the church every day except Tuesday at 15:30. Combine with Moulins (15 minutes) and Bourbon-l'Archambault (15 minutes) for the ducal trilogy of the Bourbonnais.
Before you go
- The zodiac column is in the museum, not in the church: plan for the museum ticket (€6 in 2026) to see it
- The priory church is open for self-guided visits: step in even if you had not planned to stay long
- Look up as you walk in: the sense of depth in the nave hits you all at once
