Our take
The débredinoire: a sarcophagus where you put your head through to cure madness. Worth seeing.
At Saint-Menoux, in the Allier: a Romanesque abbey church and its débredinoire, the pierced sarcophagus people slipped their heads into to cure troubled minds.
A former Benedictine abbey church of the 11th and 12th centuries, listed as a Monument historique (a protected French heritage site) as early as 1840, and a masterpiece of Bourbonnais Romanesque art. But what you come to see is the débredinoire: a stone sarcophagus pierced with an opening, into which people slipped their heads to cure troubled minds. The rite is medieval, and it is still practised. The church also holds the relics of Saint Menoux. Free, self-guided visit, every day from 9:00 to 19:00 (17:00 in winter) in 2026: allow 30 to 45 minutes. Souvigny is about ten minutes away by car, Moulins about twenty.
Why we love it
- Slipping your head into the débredinoire, the sarcophagus that tradition credits with curing the bredins, the simple-minded
- The Romanesque choir and its carved decoration, right down to the griffins drinking from the same chalice
- The hole in the side of the sarcophagus, which Blaise, Saint Menoux's simple-minded servant, is said to have drilled to put his head through, according to legend
Top tip
Self-guided visit: the débredinoire is in the church, with no need to arrange anything. The rite consists of slipping your head into the opening. Can be combined with Souvigny, about ten minutes away by car.
Before you go
- Scan the QR code at the entrance: the free audio tour goes round the church in half an hour, débredinoire included
- Combine it with Souvigny, about ten minutes away by car
- Slip your head in without touching the edges: legend says you would otherwise inherit the madness of the previous visitors
