The route in detail

Park on the church square at St-Alyre-d'Arlanc. Head for the D 999 and follow it to the right. 20 m further on, take the road on the right to La Ferreyre. Go through the hamlet and carry on along the road.

(1) 350 m later, turn right onto the forest track.

(2) At the road, carry straight on and enter the hamlet of Issac. Go past a private property and carry straight on along the grassy path; follow a cultivated field to the road. Then turn right and, 80 m further on, follow the tarmac path on the right (viewpoint over the hamlet of Clavelier and the tower of the ruined château). Cross the D105 and enter the hamlet of Clavelier.

(3) At the stone cross (possible out-and-back to climb to the ruined tower of the château, 15 minutes there and back), bear left onto the road, carry straight on along the path. At the fork (wooden cross) continue straight ahead to the D 105. Turn right for 30 m and immediately turn left to cross the hamlet of La Grange (viewpoint over St-Sauveur-la-Sagne). Go along the former school of St-Sauveur-la-Sagne and, at the stone cross, go down towards the D 105; follow it straight ahead to enter the village.

(4) Climb the alley on the left to go along the church, follow the grassy path that rises above the village (viewpoint over the church of St-Sauveur-la-Sagne and the Dore gorges). At the road, bear right, go along the cemetery and follow the forest track through the Bois de la Garde, which for a good kilometre overlooks the Dore gorges and then the Dorette gorges (possible out-and-back to the Sapin site, in the gorges). Always keep to the main track as far as a large crossroads, continue climbing to the right to Poulargues (viewpoint over the tower of the Château de Clavelier and over the Monts du Forez).

(5) At the last house of the hamlet (possible variant, if starting from St-Sauveur-la-Sagne, by turning left on the road to join Clavelier), follow the road to the right. 1 km further on, at the junction of two roads, carry straight on and, 20 m further on, take the path on the right to enter the conifer plantation. Go down towards the Sainte-Élidie chapel. At the cross, go down to the left to the chapel and cross the Dorette stream. Climb back up by the path on the left and go under the railway line.

(6) At the D 38, climb the path opposite to Germalanges. Go through the hamlet and continue to the D 999.

(7) Turn left (yellow waymarking of the La Haute-Dore circuit going off to the right) and, 200 m further on, follow the stony path rising on the right. At the road, carry straight on. Follow this path to the village of Lapeyrie. Pass a first path on the left and, at a right-hand bend, take the second path on the left. Always keep to the main path.

(8) At the hamlet of Le Montel, carry straight on (viewpoint over the village of St-Alyre-d'Arlanc). At the entrance to St-Alyre-d'Arlanc, on the tarmac, carry straight on. Then cross the railway line by turning right onto the stony path. Cross the Dorette stream and carry straight on to enter the village. At the D 999, turn right and 20 m further on turn left to reach the church.
