Overview

Frequently asked questions
Which direction is recommended for the GR400?
Clockwise from Murat: a gradual climb to the highest point on stages 2-3, then the descent. Anticlockwise (the official waymarking direction) from Aurillac: shorter stages at the start. Both directions are waymarked.
Level required?
Level 4 (hard). Used to four to six hours of walking a day with an 8-12 kg pack. Good map reading, weather sense, and the fitness for seven days in a row.
Safety and rescue?
Call 112 first in mountain areas. The IGN-Rando or Geo-Aide apps send your GPS position to the rescue services. Repatriation insurance (FFRandonnée, for example) covers medical repatriation.
