35 - From the Lignon to the École des Prophètes
Start: Parking de la gare au Chambon-sur-Lignon
From Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, you will reach Tence along the other bank of the Lignon, passing through small villages, close to the village of Panelier where Albert Camus lived during the Second World War. You will arrive in Tence along a great avenue of trees and over the bridge that crosses the Lignon. You will continue your climb on a bucolic road that rises between forests and plateaux, passing through Chaumargeais, where you can discover the École des Prophètes (School of the Prophets) and fine panoramas. A short stretch into the Ardèche will bring you back to Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, crossing the historic railway line of the Velay Express.

The École des Prophètes
In July 1942, André and Colette Chouraqui, then in Clermont-Ferrand, contacted Pastor Roland Leenhardt in Tence to find a new refuge. In November 1943, the children's homes of the OSE (Organisation de secours aux enfants, the children's relief organisation) and of the EIF (Éclaireurs Israélites de France, the Jewish Scouts of France) were closed, the children having been dispersed and hidden in safe places. Shatta Simon and Georges Levitte then asked André Chouraqui to find a place of retreat for a group of youth leaders from Moissac. Pastor Leenhardt recommended the Fournier family, at Istor near Chaumargeais. They created a circle of Jewish spiritual and philosophical study and training, to sustain and pass on the foundations of a renewed Jewish identity: “the École des Prophètes”. A plaque was put up on 20 June 2010 at Istor.
