The feel of the route
Velay Express, a historic railway: The historic Velay Express train runs from Raucoules to Saint-Agrève, on the surviving section of the railway line formerly operated by the Compagnie des chemins de fer départementaux (CFD), which ran from Dunières to La Voulte-sur-Rhône via Saint-Agrève / Le Cheylard. Opened in 1902, this line made travel easier in this plateau region, which is hard to reach, especially in winter. This railway, used by local people to go to markets and fairs, by the children of the “Enfants à la Montagne” charity of Pastor Louis Comte and by the first tourists coming to breathe the pure mountain air, was also used to carry goods, in particular the timber needed to prop up the galleries of the mines in the coalfields.
Today, the train takes you travelling from April to the end of October every Sunday and on some weekdays in season.
The route in detail
A fairly short circuit, climbing for the first 2 kilometres. Technical woodland paths follow one after another to reach Charel by a descent. One last short climb through the Bois de Peybroussou, then you reach the village by a fine descent.
