Our take
A museum in the pavilion of Anne de Beaujeu herself, regent of France. Collections from Prehistory to the 19th century, ancient Egypt and Bourbonnais sculpture included.
The Bourbons' museum, in Anne de Beaujeu's Renaissance pavilion.
Museum housed in the Renaissance pavilion of Anne de Beaujeu (regent of France 1483-1491), in the centre of Moulins. Collections of Egyptology (mummies, coffins, amulets) and regional archaeology (from Prehistory to the Gallo-Roman period). Medieval Bourbonnais sculpture, Germano-Flemish painting of the 15th and 16th centuries and academic 19th-century painting (Gérôme, Meissonier). The archaeological holdings, more than 60% of the collections, come mostly from discoveries made in the Allier in the 19th century. The building is listed as a historic monument.
In 2026: full price €6, reduced €4, free up to age 18. The ticket for the neighbouring Maison Mantin (€12, guided tour by reservation) also gives access to the museum.
Open all year: every day from 6 July to 20 September, closed on Mondays the rest of the year, as well as on 1 May, 25 December and 1 January. Allow 1 hour 30 to 2 hours.
Why we love it
- 16th-century Renaissance pavilion
- Collections from Prehistory to the 19th century (Egyptian mummies, Germano-Flemish primitives, Gérôme, Meissonier)
- Bourbonnais sculpture from the time of Pierre II and Anne de France
- Listed historic monument
Top tip
Free up to age 18, handy for families. Can be combined with the CNCS (the national centre for stage costume) and the cathedral for the day. The Master of Moulins triptych is not in the cathedral in 2026 (a facsimile stands in for it there): after a stop at the royal monastery of Brou until 3 January 2027, its return to Moulins is announced for February 2027, first here, at the museum, then at the cathedral in 2028. Guided tours (€9, reduced €7, free up to age 18, 2026 prices) are booked by phone with the museum.
