Our take

A cycle of 15th-century wall paintings almost entirely preserved, in a tiny village church. Unknown to the general public, frequented by medievalists.

Bourbonnais village church with a cycle of 15th-century wall paintings almost entirely preserved. Free self-guided visit.

Romanesque and Gothic church in the heart of Jenzat (Allier), built from the 12th to the 15th century. Wall paintings from the 15th century (the Saint Martin cycle) almost entirely preserved, a rare thing for a village church, restored in the 1990s. Listed as a Monument Historique (a protected French heritage site). Free self-guided visit all year round. Small village 30 minutes from Vichy. Pair it with the Eiffel Viaduct at Rouzat, 10 minutes away.

Why we love it

  • The Saint Martin cycle painted in the 15th century, almost complete
  • A village church that medievalists pass on in whispers

Top tip

Free self-guided visit, allow 15 to 20 minutes. Combine it with the Rouzat viaduct (the work of Eiffel, 1869), 10 minutes away, and Charroux, ranked among the Plus Beaux Villages de France (the Most Beautiful Villages of France), 20 minutes away: enough to fill a good day.

Before you go

  • Free self-guided visit. Guided visit as an option, €5 per person, Wednesdays at 10:00 from June to September.
  • If you pass through on a Wednesday morning in summer, the 10:00 guided visit (€5) brings out details you can't see on your own
  • Look up as soon as you walk in: the Saint Martin cycle covers the upper walls
