Our take

The pivotal church of Charroux, telling the story of the shift from Romanesque to Gothic over four centuries. It was part of the ramparts, and its bell tower has stayed truncated.

Romanesque and Gothic in the heart of Charroux, rue de l'Horloge. Truncated bell tower, bells defended by the inhabitants in 1793. Self-guided visit, 30 minutes is enough.

Romanesque and Gothic church in the centre of Charroux (one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France, the Most Beautiful Villages of France), rue de l'Horloge. Most of it dates from the mid-12th century: the apse and its two apsidioles (small apses), vaulted with half-domes, and the transept crossing with its rib vault. Of the bell tower and its spire, rebuilt in the late 13th century, only the octagonal storey of the belfry and a stump of spire remain: hence this truncated silhouette. The chapel and the stair turret date from the late 15th century. The church was part of the town's first ring of walls: at the south transept, machicolation corbels from the early 16th century remain. In 1793, the inhabitants opposed the destruction of its bells. Listed as a Monument historique (a protected French heritage site) in 1912. Open every day from 9:00 to 18:00 in 2026, free entry, with a leaflet and an information panel on site. Pair it with a walk around the village.

Why we love it

  • The truncated bell tower: only the octagonal storey of the belfry and a bit of spire remain
  • The stained-glass window of Saint Martin, bishop and patron of pilgrims
  • The shift from Romanesque to Gothic that you read straight off the walls
  • The coolness and silence inside, in contrast with the cobbled street outside

Top tip

Self-guided visit, allow 20 to 30 minutes. Combine it with the Cour des Dames, the Maison du Prince de Condé and Charroux walnut oil (5 minutes on foot). All of Charroux can be done on foot in 1 hour 30.

Before you go

  • Combine it with a walk around the village: the church is a few steps from everything
  • Bring a jumper even in summer, the nave stays cool
