The local guide to choosing where to stay in Clermont-Ferrand by area, budget and season. Addresses sorted by price range, from 4-star hotels to the youth hostel.

Where to stay in Clermont-Ferrand

Clermont has two faces. The modern city around Jaude, dense and full of shops. And old Clermont clinging to the cathedral, plus the medieval town of Montferrand, joined to Clermont in 1630. Depending on the area where you put down your bags, you won't experience the same city.

We've lived here long enough to have seen friends come through for a weekend, on a business trip, or stopping off on a road trip to the Sancy. This guide sorts the options by real-life use: tourist who wants to do everything on foot, curiste (someone taking the thermal cure), business traveller, family with a car, hiker using Clermont as a base to explore the volcanoes.

Choosing your area

Jaude (tourist centre). The shopping and pedestrian heart, place de Jaude with the statue of Vercingétorix, the big chain stores, the terraces. You're 5-10 minutes on foot from the cathedral, the historic district, the restaurants. It's the simplest choice for a first stay without a car. Downside: nights are noisy from Thursday to Saturday in summer, on the terrace side.

Cathedral district and old Clermont. Just above Jaude, cobbled lanes, façades in black Volvic stone, the Notre-Dame-du-Port basilica (UNESCO-listed). Quieter at night, more authentic, views of the cathedral from some hotels. Ideal for heritage and photography.

Montferrand. About 3 km north-east of Jaude, this is the medieval district, a formerly independent town before the merger. Half-timbered houses, place de la Fontaine, quiet lanes. Very calm, little nightlife, direct tram A access to Jaude (15 minutes). Who it's for: travellers who like to sleep in peace and sightsee by day.

Saint-Pierre and its market hall. North of Jaude, around place Saint-Pierre and the Saint-Pierre food hall (halle gourmande). Lively day and night, student bars, and a covered hall that remains the best address in the city for your shopping. Accommodation is often short-term rentals (Airbnb), few actual hotels.

Train station and Estaing. Near the SNCF station, 20-25 minutes on foot from Jaude. Handy if you arrive by train or leave early. A district in transition, not the most charming area, but budget hotels.

Outskirts: Cournon, Aubière, Le Brézet. Chain hotels, free parking, ideal if you're driving, on a business trip (industrial zone, airport), or on a road trip with a quick stopover. To reach the centre, tram or bus: allow 20-30 minutes.

Mid-range and upmarket hotels

Mercure Clermont-Ferrand Centre Jaude (4 stars, place de Jaude). 125 rooms, with a view of the square for the best ones, fitness room, panoramic bar with a view of the cathedral. The safe choice in the centre. Book the rooms on the square side for the view of Vercingétorix, but expect a few decibels on weekend evenings.

Hôtel Royal Saint-Mart (3 stars, Royat-Chamalières, 3 km from Jaude). 54 rooms in a family house surrounded by a large private garden, a restaurant with a carefully crafted menu, free parking. A good option if you want a bit of greenery, 10 minutes from the centre by car. No tram to Royat: it's bus B, stop 500 m away. The same family has run this Second Empire hotel-restaurant since 1853.

Hôtel Littéraire Alexandre Vialatte (4 stars, place Delille, at the foot of the historic centre). 62 rooms in a hotel dedicated to the writer Alexandre Vialatte, columnist for La Montagne. Bookcases of 500 books, and a roof terrace with a 180° view of Puy de Dôme and the cathedral spires. Seminar rooms, paid parking. For business travellers and couples.

Hôtel Oceania (4 stars, boulevard François-Mitterrand, a stone's throw from Jaude). Spa with hammam and whirlpool bath, fitness room, meeting rooms. Handy for business travellers: tram A stops in front of the hotel.

3-star hotels and simple addresses

Hôtel Le Lion (3 stars, place de Jaude). 29 rooms in a graphic style, including family rooms, a brasserie with a terrace and tram A at the door. Good to know: the floors are split-level, the hotel is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.

Hôtel Saint-André (unrated, avenue de l'Union-Soviétique, a stone's throw from the station). Run by a couple of hoteliers, simple rooms renovated in 2018, lift. The historic centre is about ten minutes on foot.

Kyriad Clermont-Ferrand Centre (3 stars, rue Bonnabaud, a few minutes on foot from Jaude). Plain, functional, ideal for a stopover night.

Budget options

B&B Hotel Clermont-Ferrand A71/A75 La Méridienne (3 stars, impasse Kepler, 2 km from the station). Chain hotel, clean, free parking: handy mainly if you're driving.

Ibis Budget Clermont-Ferrand Centre Montferrand (Montferrand). 2 stars, rooms for 2 to 4 people, tram at the foot of the hotel, free outdoor parking.

Hôtel Première Classe (Aubière, southern outskirts). Really basic (1 star), private parking: one for travellers with a car.

Auberge de jeunesse HI Clermont-Ferrand (HI France, rue Auger, 10 minutes on foot from the station). Dorms and private rooms, shared kitchen, young, international atmosphere.

Gîtes and holiday rentals

For 3 nights or more, especially with family or friends, renting is often cheaper and more pleasant. The good platforms:

Airbnb and Booking dominate. In Clermont, the offer ranges from converted student studios to bourgeois townhouses. Favour Jaude, Montferrand, or the residential districts to the west (Chamalières, Royat).

Gîtes de France Puy-de-Dôme. The offer is centred rather on the countryside around Clermont (Volvic, Riom, Charade, Royat), less on the city itself. For a mixed city/volcano stay, it's a good compromise: you sleep in the countryside and come down into the city for the day.

Logis and chambres d'hôtes (B&Bs). A few charming addresses in the inner suburbs, notably around Chanat-la-Mouteyre or Orcines (at the foot of Puy de Dôme).

Unusual stays and accommodation nearby

To step outside the classic hotel without going too far:

Perched cabins in Orcines (at the foot of Puy de Dôme). Le Dôme à bulles rents wooden perched cabins at the foot of Puy de Dôme, with a private jacuzzi spa and sauna.

Camping and the cheapest places to stay

Camping municipal du Mont-Dore Esquiladou (50 km away, but a good base if you want to alternate Clermont and the Sancy). 71 pitches and a heated pool. It is open from 1 April to 4 November 2026, and its aquatic area from 1 June to 30 September 2026. In 2026, a pitch with one adult costs €9.90 to €10.90 depending on the period.

Camping Yelloh Village Le Pré Bas (5 stars, Chambon-sur-Lac, on the shore of Lac Chambon, 40 km away). Ideal for families, with a pool and mobile home rental. In 2027, the village opens from 23 April to 12 September.

Couchsurfing and hostels. For very small budgets or solo travellers. The youth hostel mentioned above remains the best price-to-comfort ratio.

Booking tips

Peak demand. December (Christmas market), May-June (conferences, end of the university year), July-August (road-trip tourists), September (the business back-to-work season). At the end of January, the city also hosts the Short Film Festival: the 2027 edition runs from 29 January to 6 February.

Booking ahead. For July-August, book 6-8 weeks ahead, especially if you want the centre. Out of season, 7-10 days is often enough. The chains (Mercure, Best Western, Ibis) keep space until the last minute but at full rate.

Dynamic pricing. Prices move a lot with occupancy. Compare Booking, Hotels.com, and the hotel's own website.

Parking. Central Clermont is compact. On the street, parking is paid, in colour-coded zones with a time limit. If you're driving, parking weighs on the choice of hotel: paid at the Vialatte and the Oceania, free at the Royal Saint-Mart and, outdoors, at the ibis budget in Montferrand.

Tram. A single line (line A) crosses the city from the north (Les Vergnes) to the south (La Pardieu), passing through Montferrand, place Delille and Jaude. It doesn't serve the SNCF station: from there, it's bus B that gets you to Jaude. The 24-hour ticket is one to use freely if you're staying on the outskirts.

To combine with...

Clermont is an ideal base for exploring the area. Three directions to choose from depending on the season.

To the west, the Chaîne des Puys (15 to 30 minutes by car). Puy de Dôme with a climb on foot or by the Panoramique train, Puy Pariou, Volvic and its waters, the spa town of Royat. A full day.

To the south, the Sancy and the lakes (45 minutes to 1 hour). Le Mont-Dore and Puy de Sancy, Lac Chambon, Lac Pavin, Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, Saint-Nectaire. Two to three days.

To the north, the Bourbonnais and Vichy (1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes). Vichy, spa town and UNESCO site, Saint-Pourçain for the wine, Forêt de Tronçais. Ideal for a relaxing day.

To wrap up

Clermont rewards travellers who take the time to walk. Once the base is set, the rest follows: the morning for the city, the afternoon for the volcanoes, the evening for a terrace and a glass of Côtes d'Auvergne.

Vichy → Clermont-Ferrand

Born in Vichy, I spent my whole childhood and teenage years in the Allier. I have lived on the Clermont-Ferrand side for more than ten years. Travel in Auvergne comes from wanting a media outlet that really talks about the region, without the tourist-office tone. I write and pick the places with a few local contributors.
