In the heart of the Haut-Allier gorges, the Île d'Amour base in Langeac, run by Tonic Aventure, is the base camp for outdoor sports in the area. On the river side, you head down the wild Allier by canoe-kayak (from an hour-and-a-half outing to a multi-day trip), by raft, canyoning or tubing, supervised by state-qualified instructors. On land, there's climbing, an adventure course with zip lines, archery and orienteering. Shaded car park, showers and changing rooms on site. Open from spring to autumn.

Top tip
Book ahead, especially in summer. Bring shoes that stay on your feet and clothes that can get wet. The base opens in season, from spring to autumn: give them a ring before coming outside the height of summer.
