Where to stay in Vichy
Vichy changed status in 2021, when UNESCO added the town to its list of the Great Spa Towns of Europe. The soul of the town: a Belle Époque spa town, shaded parks, wrought-iron pavilions, and hot springs such as the Chomel, which gushes out at 43 °C under the glass roof of the Hall des Sources.
Three kinds of visitor share the hotels. Curistes (people taking the thermal cure) on a cure conventionnée (the cure approved for health-insurance cover), 18-21 days. Spa and relaxation weekends (Friday to Sunday, all year round). UNESCO heritage tourists (1-3 nights, May to October). This guide sorts the accommodation according to your profile.
Choosing your district
Thermal district (Parc des Sources, near the Thermes Callou and Les Dômes). The historic heart, 2 minutes on foot from the thermal baths, the Opéra and the Hall des Sources. The grand traditional hotels are concentrated here. Ideal for: curistes (the treatments are right next door), UNESCO weekends, travellers without a car. In 2026, a double room starts at €90 at the Aletti Palace and €99 at the Mercure (4 stars), and at €159 at the Célestins (5 stars).
Town centre shopping streets (rue de Paris, rue Source de l'Hôpital, place de la Victoire). A few blocks east of the thermal park. Shops, restaurants, covered market. Lively by day and by night. For: tourists, couples on a weekend away, travellers who like to walk to dinner. The Kyriad, right in the centre, lists doubles from €82 to €155 in 2026.
Bellerive-sur-Allier (left bank of the Allier). On the other side of the bridge, more residential, calm, with a view of the landscaped riverbanks. 10 minutes on foot from the centre via the bridge. For: families, long stays, remote workers. The ibis budget, opposite the racecourse and 3 km from the centre of Vichy, lists a double from €52 there in 2026.
Cusset (neighbouring commune, 3 km). A small town with a medieval past, reached by bus or by car. For: road-trip stopovers.
Station and surroundings. Handy if you arrive by train (Paris-Vichy in 3 hours, direct). The thermal park is about a ten-minute walk away.
Spa and thermal hotels (the local speciality)
This is what sets Vichy apart: several hotels offer an integrated spa using thermal water, without going through the medical cure. You book your package by the night or for the whole stay. Not every hotel in the thermal district has its own spa, though: we flag it hotel by hotel.
Célestins Spa Thermal & Hôtel (5 stars, 111 boulevard des États-Unis, on the banks of the Allier, 5 minutes on foot from the parc des Sources). The flagship of the modern thermal spa in Vichy. 129 rooms, an indoor-outdoor pool on the top floor, direct access to the thermal spa from the rooms, the restaurant Le N3. Room-only price in 2026: from €159 for a double room, €329 for a suite. In 2026, the hotel is open until 31 October: renovation work is scheduled there from November 2026. The go-to address for anyone who wants to combine a premium spa with a high-end night's stay.
Aletti Palace Hôtel (4 stars, place Joseph Aletti, opposite the Opéra). A renovated Belle Époque building, 100 rooms, classic decor. No spa or thermal baths on site: an outdoor pool in season, the restaurant La Véranda opening onto the parc des Sources and the English-style Ascot bar. The town's historic grand hotel. 2026 price: from €90 for a double room, €105 from May to September. Ask for the rooms on the Opéra side for the view.
Le Pavillon d'Enghien (3 stars, 32 rue Callou, in the heart of the thermal district). A small boutique hotel, with a summer pool in the middle of the patio, a planted terrace and a restaurant on site. A real find for anyone who wants a quiet bubble without the impersonal side of the big palaces. 2026 price: from €104 for a double room.
Hôtel Mercure Vichy (4 stars, avenue Thermale). Renovated in 2025, connected directly to the Thermes Les Dômes by a corridor you cross in your bathrobe, with the restaurant Les Dômes on site. Chain comfort, ideal location. 2026 price: from €99 for a double room.
Mid-range hotels
ibis Styles Vichy Centre (3 stars, 11 avenue Pierre Coulon). A chain, fresh decor, breakfast included, 5 minutes on foot from the park. In 2026, a single room starts at €79.
Hôtel Kyriad Spa Vichy Cinq Mondes (3 stars, 6 avenue du Président Doumer, right in the centre, 10 minutes on foot from the station). 32 air-conditioned rooms, a brasserie and a spa (jacuzzi, hammam, sauna). 2026 price: €82 to €155 for a double room.
Budget options
ibis budget Vichy (2 stars, 145 avenue de Vichy in Bellerive-sur-Allier, opposite the racecourse, 3 km from the centre of Vichy). 72 air-conditioned rooms, reception open 24 hours a day. In 2026, a double starts at €52.
Youth hostels and backpacker hostels. Vichy has no official FUAJ (French youth hostel federation) hostel. For very tight budgets: Couchsurfing, or the campsites of Bellerive-sur-Allier (see below).
Gîtes and holiday rentals
For a stay of more than 3 nights, especially on a cure conventionnée (you stay 18-21 days), a furnished rental beats a hotel on comfort and on price alike.
Furnished rentals for curistes. For a cure, aim for a studio or a T2 (two-room flat) with a kitchenette and a washing machine, right next to the thermal baths.
Private rentals. Studios in the town centre, family T2s, whole houses on the Bellerive side: the booking platforms cover every format, and for a long stay it's worth asking for the weekly discount.
Gîtes de France Allier. The offer is centred on the countryside around Vichy (Saint-Yorre, Lapalisse, Charroux, Saint-Pourçain). Pair it with wine-tasting trips towards Saint-Pourçain.
Charming places to stay
Maisons d'hôtes (guesthouses) in Charroux (west of Vichy, listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France, the Most Beautiful Villages of France). Ideal for combining Vichy by day with quiet nights in a medieval village.
Camping and very cheap places to stay
Camping Les Acacias (Bellerive-sur-Allier, 1.5 km from the centre). 4 stars, heated pool, close to the riverbanks. In 2026, open from 11 April to 4 October, with mobile homes to rent.
Camping Beaurivage (Bellerive-sur-Allier, 2 km from Vichy). 4 stars, on the banks of the Allier, facing Vichy. Air-conditioned mobile homes or pitches for tents and caravans, a covered, heated spa-pool area, a greenway starting from the campsite. Open from 17 April to 4 October in 2026.
Curistes: specific advice
If you're coming for a cure thermale conventionnée (3 weeks, medical prescription, partial Sécurité sociale coverage), three golden rules.
Proximity. Choose accommodation within 800 m of the thermal baths (Callou or Les Dômes depending on your treatment). You go every day, sometimes twice, and thermal water is tiring.
Private kitchen. A diet is often prescribed, so a kitchenette is a must. Aim for a rental that has one.
Weekly or monthly rates. Always ask for the long-stay rate before booking.
Vichy's tourism and spa office is at 19 rue du Parc.
Booking tips
Peak season. April to October for the tourist season; in 2026, the Thermes Callou receive curistes from 16 February to 14 November. Absolute peaks: July-August and early September. Winter: very quiet, low prices. December works for the Christmas market and the festivities.
Booking ahead. For a cure conventionnée: 4-6 months ahead for the best flats. Spa weekend: 4-6 weeks. UNESCO tourist: 2-4 weeks.
Vichy Pass. In summer, from 1 July to 31 August, the 24-hour or 48-hour pass gives reduced rates on visits, museums, châteaux and sports or relaxation activities with partners. It isn't free, and can be bought at the tourist offices of Vichy, Billy, Châtel-Montagne and Le Mayet-de-Montagne.
Train or car. Vichy station is about a quarter of an hour on foot from both the Aletti and the Célestins. The centre is easy to get around on foot: for most activities, you don't need a car.
To combine with...
Vichy is a calm town, made for rest. But the Allier département around it is worth day trips.
Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule (north-west of Vichy). The Bourbonnais vineyards, tastings, walks in the Sioule valley.
Charroux (west of Vichy). One of the Plus Beaux Villages de France, mustard workshops, a medieval stroll.
Forêt de Tronçais (north-west of Vichy). One of Europe's finest oak forests, hiking, ponds.
Clermont-Ferrand (1 hour to the south). For a volcanic day, see the where to stay in Clermont-Ferrand guide if you extend your stay there.
Lapalisse and its château (north-east of Vichy). Byword for the “truths of La Palisse” (statements of the obvious), Renaissance heritage.
To wrap up
Vichy runs at three very different paces depending on your profile. Choose your accommodation accordingly. For a premium spa, aim for the Célestins, open until 31 October 2026 (works scheduled from November 2026). For the Belle Époque decor opposite the Opéra, choose the Aletti. For a UNESCO discovery weekend, a 3-star in the centre such as Le Pavillon d'Enghien is more than enough. On a cure conventionnée, aim for a furnished rental with a kitchenette within 800 m of the thermal baths. For a budget stopover on a road trip, the ibis budget in Bellerive-sur-Allier does the job, 3 km from the centre.
