Our take
The first pond created at Tronçais, in 1789, for the forges: a 4.9 km loop between woods and water, angling and a picnic area along the route.
A forest pond in the heart of Tronçais, at Saint-Bonnet-Tronçais. A circuit of the pond, angling, the history of the forges.
A forest pond in the heart of the state forest of Tronçais (Allier), in the commune of Saint-Bonnet-Tronçais. It was the first pond created at Tronçais: Nicolas Rambourg created it in 1789 by damming the Sologne, to supply his forges. It covers 18 hectares.
No swimming here: the pond is entirely dedicated to angling, with a fishing permit. It is managed by the Saint-Bonnet-Tronçais angling association (AAPPMA).
For walking, the circuit of the pond starts from the Rond de Tronçais, where parking is free: a 4.9 km loop (about 1 hour 15, medium difficulty), with a picnic area. To swim, head for the Étang de Saint-Bonnet or the Étang de Goule, at Valigny: their equipped beaches are supervised in summer.
Why we love it
- The 4.9 km loop around the pond, between woods and water
- 18 hectares of calm water, created in 1789 by a dam on the Sologne to supply the Tronçais forges
- Anglers settled at the water's edge
- The shady walk around the pond, and the picnic that goes with it
Top tip
Fishing requires a fishing permit, on sale online or from a retailer (€14 a day in 2026). 4 km away, starting from the village of Saint-Bonnet-Tronçais, the Remarkable Oaks circuit (8.3 km) leads to the foot of oaks, some of them more than four centuries old.
